Well, i'm about fed up with not being able to see a darn thing while backing up. I dealt with it for a while, but things gotta change.

I dont have a roof rack, and i dont want to mount lights to the bottom of the bumper.

I was thinking about using angle iron and fabbing a mount that would attach to the spare holder.

Has anyone else done anything like this that i've just missed on my ventures through the site, or am i a pioneer in my own sad little way?

Any other ideas would be fine, i'd love to be a guinea pig right now as i've tried nothing and i'm all out of ideas.

Just a thought, but:

You might be able to just get some angle iron and mount it behind the spare like i'm doing with my cb antenna mount, but extend the side so its past the spare tire and mount a light facing to the rear on it. Sort of like this:

I saw a guy that had a light that was mounted with a wing nut through the center cap of the spare tire
he had some of those male/female quick connectors so that if he got a flat he could just pull it off and put it back when he was done
I did not see it in use but it made it through a trail ride just fine and I would guess it would be rather bright cause he used a hela 550 light
he did a relay with a master swich so he could turn it off or it would come on when he put it in reverse

Im thinking about mounting some on my gas tank skid. I would have to mount them high enough that they wouldnt get hit offroad. So they couldnt really shine a good distance. :?

Someone said they put some LED's in for their backup lights, and they were better than stock backups. Not nearly as bright as any thing else mentioned, but I was thinking of doing this just as a simple mod.

IPF light kit isnt a bad idea, gonna look into that a bit more.

Depending on price, i may just do the mount to the spare tire idea, i have angle iron as it is, and it'd just be a matter of drilling a few holes.

The LEDs in my back up lights sound like a darn good idea, anyone have any info on this as to where to begin?

I did a quick search but my results were...well bad.

I remember seeing someone with lights that mounted to the trailer hitch. I have been trying to locate them myself but cant find them. That might be a good idea if you have a reciever. Apprarently you can still use it with the lights.

This is what i did. These are $25 lights i got at pepboys. Mounted them on the bottom of the bumper as shown. I relayed them off the stock backup lights with power coming from a distribution block i installed under my rear seat for all my toys.

As I work at an RV store we have the lights that mount to the hitch, if your interested I'll find out who makes them. For that matter I have them on mine and am getting ready to take them off in favor of a newer design by Draw Tite. Don't know whether the lightswork anymore but they are easy to get. You can have them if you like.

I used a set of lights just like these and mounbted them to the hinge covers of the rear glass. I put 1/16th thick sheet metal behind the plastic hinge covers for strength, added washers to spread the force and mounted the lights throught the covers. I then ran the wires in through center break light. I too used a tap from the stock backup light's to flip the relay for them. What this did was turn on the lights when I put the Jeep in reverse. I soon wished I could turn them on without having to put it is reverse and ended up wiring a panel switch so I could turn them on whenever I wanted. Mine are mounted high enough that they make decent work lights.

i'm really liking the idea of mounting it to the rear panel on the window glass. Cheap part to replace when the lease is up.

depending if i get a hitch or not for xmas will play a large roll on what i actually do.

I know this is an old topic, but do you have pictures of this setup?
I want to get some lights without making my jeep look like a carnival ride, something subtle. That's why I was thinking of hooking up lights underneath the bumper, but that won't illuminate distance well.
