Hey guys hows it going? im pretty new to the forum, but love it. Anyways I have a seriuos question concerning my jeep. I have a 2004 jeep liberty rengade 4x4. It has high mileage which i think is the problem 82,000, but I just love to drive. Any ways my problems is...... while driving or sometimes even stopped at a light or stop sign, my jeep will rev real high. It wont red line or anyhting but just real high and if im driving itll rev real high and if i dont pull over, itll almost jeerk the jeep like when you get cught up with a manual.as soon as i pull over and turn it off and on again, its goes back to normal and wont happen again till a day or two later. i brought it in to the shop and got it compeltey tuned up and overhauled and the guy said it was fine, but a day afterwards it happened again. Do you know if this could be my transmission? i love my jeep so im willing to replace it, but just want some input of what it might be first. thanks guys.

Is it at idle, at the light than rev, or is it revving as you roll up to the light after you had your foot on the gas? If it's the latter you may be hooking the throttle pedal on your floor mats.

Sounds like the transmission is slipping if I read the post right.

When your step on the gas, the engine RPM's just increase and the Liberty doesn't move? If so that is the sign of a slipping transmission...

What does the transmission fluid look like? Does it smell burnt? is it darker than normal?

You might want to check your throttle body, and linkage first since that's easy and you can do it yourself in about a half an hour. It could be getting stuck open. I had that problem with a Toyota Cressida with high milage (175,000 miles). It got stuck open at full throttle upon entering the interstate. Shot up over 115 mph before I got it shut down. That fast with no power to the power brakes or power steering isn't much fun at all. Once I finally got it off to the side of the road and stopped, it was still stuck at wot. The throttle linkage had come slightly lose. That allowed it to bind when it was pulled at the wrong angle. It could also be the throttle body is dirty. The blade inside could be gummed up. Especially if you use an upgraded intake without a bag in dusty conditions or offroad. If that's not it, take it to a good transmission shop.

Did it start right after the tranny service? If so, I'd suspect the wrong fluid...did they use ATF +4? The throttle plate idea is good too...

was that the first time the fluid had been changed? If so, that could be the problem.

Does it rev on its own? Or when your hit the gas? thats kinda confusing. :?

I'd check my invoice from fluid change (who did it?) to see fluid used...I only suspect it because of your timing with the service. I'd also try disconnecting my battery overnight and resetting the ecu.

Ah in that case...I'd do as the other suggested...check TB and plate, disconnect cruise control vacuum and test it w/o hooked up, also look for vacuum leaks in some air hoses up on the manifold or in your intake ducting
