As we all know, there's an interlock between the automatic tranmission shifter and the steering wheel column that requires the transmission shifter to be all the way forward--in park--to rotate the key and remove it. You can shut the engine off with the vehicle in another gear, but you can't rotate the key to get it out unless the transmission is in park.

Here's my problem: I have to really give the shifter a good smack forward to trip that switch most of the time. It's like the switch is too far recessed. I'm concerned that I'm eventually going to break something, because I really have to smack that shifter hard at times to push it enough to trip the switch and allow the key to rotate out.

Of course, when I asked a dealer to look at it, they claimed they couldn't replicate the problem. Uh huh. Well, it doesn't happen 100% of the time, only about 75%. So maybe they were in that 25%.

Anyone else have this problem? I've been living with it for 2 years and 30K (it behaved like this when new). Should I get it fixed under warranty? Not worry about it?

Probably just needs that cable either adjusted or replaced. Seems like Ive read about this before. Cannot remember which one they had to do.

If the problem has been getting progressively worse over the last 2 years, I would schedule an appointment with the dealer to get it replaced or corrected under the 3/36 ASAP.

Besides, it'll be one less thing to worry about in the long run. And that is a good thing

Next time just call and have them tow it in maybe they will believe you. Sometimes they just don't want to make any effort to solve a problem, if they don't have a computer code saying what part to replace they are L.O.ST.
