This is a 2006 Jeep Liberty sport 24000miles 3.7l
Ok I was trying to merge onto beltway\highway traffic when I started to push the gas petal the ESP light started flashing {was not currently on}
{on the dash} and the car lost total power and started to decelerate {rpms stayed the same even know the petal was floored and there was no speed increase}. This lasted about 18sec. Then the rpms shot through the roof and the truck took off and the light stopped flashing. Conditions on the road were warm and dry. This seems to happen every morning now and afternoon and never when I have the service mang. in the car. They ran the computers and found no error codes. Has anyone else had this problem? I need some help because the dealership can't do anything unless the computer leaves an error code and my jeep may leave me in a situation that may leave me dead

update!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok if you have any info at all that might help me please post asap I am going to meet the head of Jeep's service department tomorrow and any other experiences with this or solutions I can offer him will be a great help. Also, I have found this problem usually happens when the jeep has either sat over night or all day while I work. If you turn the ESP on with the button on the steering column It seems to fix the problem but when you turn it back off it will start again for aprox 15 to 17 sec. I’ve counted

update.....
Talked to chrysler rep. today and he says again they have never had such a problem before. Funny because I found 2people with the same problem last night on yahoo. When I brought this to his attention he said ," anyone can write anything on the internet"
So what I need from my fellow Jeep owners is if you have experanced this problem with the ESP system What did they do to fix it. Also I will need a vin. number of the jeep fixed so they can research what was done to correct the problem.
Your my only help fourm
thanks :!:

Update
I got the dealership to finally agree that there was a problem and take my liberty in.
Just 1 day later
I have been told that it is fixed and that the problem was caused by the left rear wheel sensor.
This morning on the way to work again when merging into traffic the ESP light started flashing and the same problem. This time it lasted only a few seconds. I am doubting myself slightly because it was misting\ light rain out. the possablity is there that the ESP system was doing what it was supose to.
I will update after this weekend and let the fourm know if it happens again and if it really was the rear wheel sensor.
I will say for a 5 star dealership I am very disapointed ! I have been disrespected, lied to ,and basiclly given the run around

Looks like the left rear wheel speed sensor wasn't the fix I had hoped for.
Last night going to dinner, it happens again. Just tiring to accelerate on the highway and ESP light started flashing and loss of gas peddle and it seemed like the jeep was breaking. This was going on and off for about 5 miles. I did notice that when you turn on the ESP you do get back little control. Well its back to the dealer Monday.

would it hurt to just leave the ESP thingy turned on?

I drive a BIG truck ,60,000 lbs, with what is called an auto shift trans mission wich means that you use the cluch to start and stop and the trans. does the rest
it has something like 24 different sensors on it and if one of them is not working it will do all kinds of strange junk
your ESP system may be the same way it may have a bad sensor but it may be a real pain to find out wich one is bad?

I would ask them to simply disable all the functions of ESP and see what happens
from what little I know about ESP it sounds like it trys to control breaks and gas to keep the rig from spinning out of control
wich means that it will control break at all 4 corners as well as gas if it sees that one wheel is going to fast it may be pulling the power and appling the breaks to that wheel

or as with most electronics the simplest answer is most time the right one
the swich on the dash for ESP is going out? or what ever it controls is going out?
if they can not turn off esp then I would have them reflash the ECM thing ,computer, that may help as well

I dont realy know but I look at the "fancy stuff" as "just one more thing to break"

wish ya the best

Mine did this once, in the morning, while raining, but that was 10k miles ago and only one time. Some how it thinks a wheel is spinning. It maybe the wiring to the sensor not the actual sensor

ESP=Electronic Stability Program.

Not sure why you wouldn't want to have that safety feature turned on at all times when on the street.

I leave mine on and have no problems at all.

I did see there was a recall on the brake control computer I will send that info. to the dealer ASAP
Why? because the dealer plays stupid every time I talk to them. As for just leaving the esp on well, I shouldn't have to for 1 and I can feel the jeep fighting it's self. { slugish}

“You need to ask for the regional service rep. Talk to the Dealer owner or GM”.
This I have done trust me ! They have already replaced the left rear wheel sensor. This stop the problem for about 24hrs.
I wish this only lasted for a few seconds; it starts off only being a few seconds then progressively gets worse it seems.
Example
Friday morning the day after getting the jeep back merging on to the beltway\ highway the light flashed again and the gas peddle lost all response and the brakes seemed to engage. This lasted about 5 sec. I thought that it was possible that the system was doing what it was suppose to do being it was a little damp out.
No problems after work or on the way to dinner Friday night. After dinner I was coming home and as I started to merge into traffic again it started and wouldn’t stop. ESP Light flashed and gas peddle went to the floor with little response. The jeep shook because as the light flashes it seems to cut on and off some what. The only way I could get the car to pick up any speed and drive some what was to turn the ESP switch on { button on column}
Even with the ESP turned on {on the column }the truck still seems very sluggish and like it is fighting it’s self

This is not a problem I can live with being I have only owned this jeep for 4 to 5 months. Also I have had this happen just driving down the road. it happens most at higher speeds {above30mph}

Because those of us with 6spds have to deal with bad programming from DCX. The systems will dog down when you turn and accelerate at the same time. The most I've heard of & experienced is a bout 5 seconds of terror as oncoming trucks try to run you over, but it sounds similar. Unclear as to if this is a 6spd or not. Also, the author seems to confuse pushing the ESP disable button for turning it on; however, from the description, it sounds much worse that the simple programming problems that the 6spds suffers from.

Come to find out when you push the ESP button on the steering col. and the light lights on the dash {pic of a car skidding}
you are actully turning the ESP off.
basiclly if the light is on the ESP is off.
that is why the truck reacted better when i hit the switch \ makes sense

When you "turn the system on" your actually turning it off the system is on as long as the light is out, but if the ESP light is on the system is off.
Have the dealership re-center your clockspring as it sounds like it is off center. I had the same problem after one of the guys on my team performed a clockspring recall on one, they probably did the recall prior to you buying it and they may have installed it with the wheels turned slightly.
I'm a dealership tech.

Thats why the little button says "ESP OFF" :wink:

If the system thought that you were turning or trying to turn and you were actually going straight it would definantly make the ESP system cut power. It would think you were in a small skid situation. Let us know what it turns out to be.

Moose, I had a word with our Factory Rep about the issues with ESP and she said she was going to check it and get back to me. Now after dealing with her and my problems with my transmission on my SRT-4, I'll have to bug her for the next 6 months to get anything out of her but it's a start. She said she wasn't aware of any issues with ESP and the manual transmission.

They don't sell enough of them to even know... I don't know the numbers, but I'm sure its 99:1 for automatics. So if you only have a few people with the thing, and only a few of them are having problems, you might be down to 50 or 100 people in the whole county with the issue. If service stonewalls most of them with the "it's fine" answer, you're left with only a hand full willing to bump it to the next level :(

I dropped the jeep of first thing this morning and spoke with the manger. Looks like the head tech. told him he could make the jeep ESP fail by speeding up while turning right which is why they thought it was the left rear wheel speed sensor.
This just isn't true I have the problem whether going straight or in a turn, it doesn't seem to matter. The only thing I have come to see consistent is that it happens at speeds over 30mph. back roads\ city streets I am fine it's highways that seem to do me in. As of this morning they were calling the star service who would contact the engineers to see what the next step should be.

I would like to say the dealership has realized the severity of this problem and have begun to treat me with a little more respect.

Ok I have had my jeep back for 3 days with no problem.
The Fix? When I originally purchased the vehicle {brand spanken used}, they replaced 3 of 4 tires stating that they only replace what is bad.
Do you see the problem here? The ESP thought that the smaller tire was in a skid because its revolution was faster that the new tires {larger}.
So now, I have 4 new tires replaced under warrantee free of charge to me and a completely functional jeep liberty waiting for the snow
thanx for all your input and help
