With all the snow and ice we have been having my son got some chains for his car. My wife asked if we should have chains as well. So I was wondering, does one need chains on a 4x4?

Also, will chains interfear with the pintch weld in the front wheel well?

Most of the Colorado group will have experience with this - I only read about them - but you should be able to put chains on the rear - but not the front.

You should be able to run the Z type chains like your son probably bought with no problems. The rotating mass of the old type chain (heavier built chain links) really sling the links away from the tire so you need more clearance. Also you shouldn't run any kind of chain faster than 20 mph to keep their integrity sound.

Get some studded chains for the rear, and go slow, that will keep you on the road.

Check the owners manual. It gives the exact type/model to be used on the rear wheels.

You got a messed up manual then.

Quote:
Page 209 of the 2003 manual says:

"CAUTION! Install chains on the rear wheels as tightly as possible and then retighten after driving about 1/2 mile (0.8 km)."

Page 210:

"Tire chains that are recommended for this vehicle are listed below:
Mopar P/N 82206828 with P235/70R16 and P235/65R17 tires.
Mopar P/N 82207074 with P215/75R16 tires."

Gee... I am so used to asking here... I forget to check the manual! I guess I am used to all the better advise here.
