I get a tiny amount of foam, but good Lord that's a lot... It looks like you're making bread in your engine.

I've seen about 1/2 of that amount in my own motor. My trip to work is 6 miles (on the higway) the golf course is 1.2 miles away and the store is less than 1 mile away... Clean as much of that off as possible, change the oil and put in synthetic and see what happens.

I'd imagine that there is much more of that under your valve covers too.

I just changed out Amsoil oil out and mine looked close to that after 12000 miles and 9 months.

I currently have AMSOIL in there. Should I continue with AMSOIL or use something else?

People have see the same thing with all types of oils. Funny thing is my daily round trip commute is about 17 miles total and since switching To Amsoil I have not seen that. Prior to Amsoil in my blue KJ I ran Mobil 1 for a few oil changes and Did see it. I'm not sure I would blame the oil for it though, I'm thinking there must be another cause that we need to figure out.

Remember not to over fill your oil either. Too much oil is actually worse than too little sometimes. Too much oil will cause it to foam inside the crankcase = almost no lubrication on the pistons and rods = destroyed engine.

Update: I checked all my vehicles last night just to make sure and all are fine. My blue KJ is my daily driver and even so only has about 39K miles on it. My daily commute is short and i average about 100 miles a week. No funky residue to be found.

My wifes KJ has around 11K miles on it and most of that is from trips to Moab, the Rubicon and AZ and to trail heads around here. Very little of those miles are commuting miles. It was switched to Amsoil just prior to our trip to Moab last year in March after buying it and it still has the same oil in it. It had 4700 miles or so on it when it was changed. there are No signs of the goop in the oil filler or cap.

The also checked our 05 Scion XB (Toaster), bought new in mid 04, and has had Amsoil in it since around 7,000 miles (first couple changes were free from dealer) and it now has about 27k on it. It is used the most for running around town on short trips, etc. and it shows No signs of oil goop.

I agree on the above about overfilling. Not sure if that is what is causing the problem as I doubt that many have overfilled and I know that wasn't the problem w/ mine when it did that w/ Mobil 1. BTW, I certainly am not blaming Mobil 1, just noting that I had the problem early on when using it and don't have it now.

My KJ is my daily driver and has about 94K on it. I am going to do an oil change on it and see how it progresses... :?

JJ you also live in desert, so that could have something to do with in. Out here in Ohio and Michigan it is substantially more humid and alot wetter. We often go a whole weeks where it never really stops raining. Roads remain wet and the sun doesnt come out.

I wonder if climate has a lot to do with it. For example, I've never seen it happen to my Jeep in New Mexico, even with lots of short trips. Here in Ohio it happens alot, especially if I do alot of short trips.

I've had it just as bad as depicted and my engine is still running strong.

I was once told by a Toyota mechanic that you'll get that condensation goop with all engines. What makes it more noticeable on a KJ is that the filler cap is not located directly on the engine. It it were on the engine the movement of nearby fluids/oil would keep the cap looking cleaner.

He also thought there was a TSB on this. The fix was to put in some kind of damper that would allow you to pour oil in, but not allow the reverse flow of vapors up to your oil cap. In actuality, this would only hide the goop from you or keep it from collecting on the oil cap.

Maybe this advice should be taken with a grain of salt since my friend is a Toyota mechanic and doesn't work on many Jeeps. Still, the explanation makes since, especially if you've ever seen what the vapors from a fast food fryer will do to the vents above it.

I'd clean and keep an eye on it, I wouldn't think you'd have a lot over build up over one or two short drives. I would think it would take some time for the film to build back up.

I am sure it has to do with where you live. High Humidity in the air and short trips is what does it. The condensation in the oil doesnt have time to burn off.. :?

I really don't know if has anything to do with where you live, I bought my KJ in southern GA and started it off on Mobile one and noticed a little goop then, moved to San Diego and change it over to Amsoil after being in SD for 3 months and it was still their when I changed over then I moved to Southern VA and changed it after 9 months and 12000 miles and it was there, I went back to Mobile one this time just cause I didn't plan properly to get Amsoil here, I will go back in 4000 to amsoil.

I think that it may have something more to do with overfilling it, I have always noticed mine sits just above the full line on the dipstick.

Either that or maybe it has to do with the Air intake?? I had the K&N Aircharger in mine. Probably not but I changed mine out anyways.

I had cleaned it out real good and then drove to Pittsburgh and back, about 640 miles round trip and then took the pictures. So that build up didn't take to long.

I just drained the AMSOIL and put in a new filter with some fresh cheap oil. I put some additive in also to help with sludge build up. I'm goinig to keep an eye on it over the next couple of weeks and probably change it again real soon to help clean it out.

From the sounds of it, it seems pretty common from all the responses. I'm just afraid that I might have a cracked head or bad head gasket and leaking some antifreeze.

The only way you could have a failed HG is if the engine really overheated or the gaskets were bad from the start. If you were loosing coolant into the block the coolant level would also be going down + all of the oil would have that milky substance.

Keeping an eye on the filler neck is probably the best maintainence. I am pretty sure that most of the condinsation forms in that area since the filler neck is the highest point in the engine. And since most of the condinstation is a vapor in the crank case - it rises into the filler neck and then cools back to a liquid state on the cooler plastic parts. ???

If it sets your mind at ease, I had the same problem on a VW, an air-cooled beetle. I was young and learned quickly that when Dad says "here, I have 3 cases of Quaker State" to just say NO.

Hey LostRenegade

I had the same thing happen as you, I replaced the PCV valve and it stopped. The crap clogged the PCV valve. YOu might want to try that.
