any reason my front sway bar bushing would need to be replaced at 22k?
could sand cause them to fail?

What did they look like when removed? If sand did get inbetween the bar and bushing surface, the grains could have acted like a sandpaper and wore down both the bar surface and imbedded itself in the rubber material. This is the first time I have ever heard of a bushing failure on a part that doesn't move a whole lot

Did you actually see the bushings? It is pretty typical for them to get dried out and make some noise in that amount of time. Most of the time you can just lube them up and they are good to go though. I've never heard of them going bad after 22k.

You can get better ones (Daystar, h.d.) at All J for $25.

Did they actually fail mechanically: parts are no longer where they are supposed to be?
or just acoustically: squeak like crazy during colder weather..

We sure do seem to be hearing alot about the SB bushings lately. Could this be another LBJ recall thing that has gone unnoticed??

I know, I put up a post the other day and everyone said SB bushings, I still need to grease mine since the noise is getting really annoying!!! And i would take it to the dealer but they'll just waste half a day and not fix anything, then turn to me and say "we couldn't duplicate the complaint"!!! ;)

that's exactly what they told me when I took mine in for the noise.

They would never recall a part like that just b/c they make some noise. Just lube them up and be happy.

Its kinda like a squeaky door. Their not going to recall the hinges just because they squeak. :)

In the mean time you can lube them with some spray silicone lube, it won't hurt the rubber. Or you can disassemble them and use some lithium base grease.

No, there's no safety issue here. They technically work just fine, but need some lube once in a while. With bad LBJs you get wheels falling off so it is a completely different scenario.
