I'm quickly approaching my 12000 mile service. They want us to replace our diff oil. The manual says that the limited slip diff requires an additive. Does anyone have the breakdown of the VIN that'll tell me if i have the limited slip or not.

I appologise if this has been covered. Thanks for any help you can offer.

I believe that ALL CRDs are open at both ends...The ESP/TRACTION CONTROL acts much like a LSD but you should not need "LSD Additive". If all else fails...CHECK YOUR OWNERS MANUAL...it should tell you.

I'm not sure the VIN has that - although I don't have a decoder ring, and I'd bet the owners manual lists a LSD and then says 'if equipped' or similar weasel words - However you can go to the Jeep website - put in your VIN and ask them for a build sheet that will list all options.
If you didn't special order it - I'd bet Darby's right that All CRDs were open.

I did look through the owners manual. It didn't specifically say vehicles with ESP do not have LSD so it was a little unclear. As said above they had to throw in there "if equipped" and stuff like that, never clearly indicating wether the CRD has it or not.

Now that you mention it though it makes perfect sense. Thanks for your help.

I thought the tag on the diff had that info?

On the window sticker of our CRD the rear axle is listed as.
“Trac-Lok Differential Axle”

It is on the right side under “Optional Equipment”
No mention of the vehicle having ESP/Traction control.

I've been trying to figure that out too. I have an '05 so it doesn't have the Automatic ESP option, but it does say it has Trak-Lok -- But what does that actually mean? when I go off-roading it definitely feels like its open!

(However, if its in 4WD-Part time, going around the corners you can feel it locked up)

06 has ESP instead of limited slip - less manufacturing cost to add ESP software to the abs than metal to the rear diff. 05's had limited slip available as an option - ESP was not available on 05's.

If you have the 05 with the "Off Road Package" it has the limited slip. I read on this forum the 06's don't have it.

Track lock is the limited slip in 05 models the 06 with esp didn't have the track lock as an option.

rpapkey,

You didn’t mention what year CRD you have.

For 2005, the Trac-Loc limited slip rear differential was an option.

Starting for the 2006 model year ESP (electronic stability program), which combined stability control, traction control (with both brake & throttle modulation) & brake assist, became a new standard feature on the Liberty. So there was no need for the limited slip differential anymore.
