I am experiencing a loud "pop" noise when I really step on the brakes. The noise comes from the front passenger side wheel area. I hear the noise only when I really slam the breaks. Though I also hear a similar noise when I am going fairly slow, and have the wheel turned as far left as it will go. Anyone ever experienced this? Could it be something with the spacer lift? I know I got the recall for my ball-joints in the mail last week. But it wouldn't be the ball joint making that kid of noise. My brakes have been squeaking for about a month now as well, so I guess it's time for some new pads....but I don't know if that would have anything to do with it either.

PS - the best example I can give, is while driving straight...... slamming the breaks hard at about 40 mph, I hear the "POP!!" when I get down to around 10 mph.

Check the bolts that hold your calipers on, I had a shop to remain unamed in Colorado Springs replace my axle seal and repair my arb, and after I got home, the front was poping. I looked at the caliper braket bolt, and the lower one was gone, and the top one was about a quarter out. All you need to do is take the wheel off and look at the back side of the brake caliper.

On top of a loose caliper bolt, check for any play in the brake pads, rotor or entire hub assembly. A noise like that is an indication that something is "a-miss" up front. Time to break out the good old jack & jack stands.

I have heard noises like this on other vehicles and 1 out of 3 times the caliper was loose. The other time I had a bad bearing in the hub and on one car I had a busted swaybar link - but again, these were all on different vehicles. I've never heard any poping like this on the Liberty

Check those ball joints. If you are hearing the noise when the front of your liberty returns to normal ride height (after slamming on the brakes) this could be the ball joint unloading.

If the ball joint recall has not been done, get it done and see if you still have the noise.

... and they should notice if there is a loose bolt and either let you know or fix it for you.

I had a noise something similar. Mine also did it when I put the Jeep in reverse and began to back up. Took off wheel and noticed that my inside brake pads were wearing a lot more than my outside pads were. My rotors were also bad. Changed out both rotors and pads, made sure calipers were working properly, and the noise is gone. I would check ball joints first though if you haven't had that done. I had my ball joints replaced last fall.
