Yes, I did clean the sensor and did see an improvement, but not as dramatic as the improvement from the disabled EGR the first time. Time will tell how it goes this time. I suspect that when the ECU realizes it can't run EGR, it runs a different set of parameters which aren't optimized for emissions. I also suspect that something else may be out of spec in terms of baseline timing or who knows what. It may be a case of two wrongs offsetting each other for all I know. I also should mention that since my original EGR flow control failure I had a dead battery (not the vehicle's fault) and may have lost some learned values. I also found and corrected an air leak in the fuel system. Suffice it to say there are a lot of variables in play on my vehicle.

Let me add, I've had 2 EGRs replaced and not one of them threw a CEL.

How did you know they needed replacing?

I hadn't posted on this in a while. I plugged the EGR flow control back in and have been running with the MAF disconnected. With the MAF disconnected I seem to get the same benefits as with the flow control unplugged - increased mileage and decreased smoke. I'm glad the ORM has taken off. It seems to have prompted the experimentation and feedback I was hoping for when I originally posted about unplugging the EGR flow control.
