I was looking on the Jeep accesories site and there are Polished Stainless Steel Side Rails (Part #82209297) I was wondering if these would work as rock rails or if they are purely for looks? I would rather have stainless and they look a little better too. So if they work as well then I would rather get these.

There purely for looks, the oem rock rails are even flimsy but will last longer the step rails.

I second that. Purely for looks. They get bent easily. The rock rails that we use will stand up to punishment. You can get Boulder Bars, Skinks Sliders or the Carolina Rock Shop rails ... even roll your own.

OEM Rock Rails found on older Reny's as stock, are okay for easy trails only. While I did do Moab hard trails with them in 2005 and didn't trash them, they did get a dent in them.

When you look at their cost to effectiveness, you might as well buy LOST memberships for a bunch of people on here.

OEM Step rails will get ripped off and are totally useless as protection. If you are not planning on off-roading and only want looks, get the OEM Rock Rails. If you have a wife and kids that struggle to get into the KJ and not planning on going off-road, get the step rails.

If you plan to hit the trails moderate level and up, get aftermarket rails.

For the price of the OEM rock rails or tubes - you can just as easily pick up a set of aftermarket rock rails that are 10x stronger and look better for the same price (or less if you find them used like I did)

Uh huh...a great option!

Many DIY'ers with the Rock Rails....and many different neat designs. Jeepjeepster just got a set done himself....really nice!

It'll take some time and effort but it will all pay off when you're done and can look at the finished product that you built yourself and saved a hundred dollars or so.
