that is an easy one

and as far as towing heavy with the electric yes you do need to wach the temp but you should do that any way

Agreed

Under 1500 RPM / Idle - Advantage Electric
1500 - 3000 RPM / Low cruise or "grunt work" - Advantage Mechanical
Highway Speed - Advantage Electric

If by grunt work you mean towing a boat down the road then yes mech is better cause you are moving air from the fan and the motion of the rig
but trail work it is very very hard to keep up any speed to keep air moving other than from a fan

we are getting way off topic nad should maby start a new thread

While off-roading in low gear, the engine is at higher RPMs and the mechanical fan will spin at higher speed. What about fan efficiency, power consumption, and size? I'm not questioning your reasoning Jason, but want to know DC's reasoning. Essentially, my question is: why does the mechanical fan come standard without the tow package on the Renegade?

Alright - I'll start a new thread on the fan topic... Sorry to the OP for a total thread derailment

I must wheel different then you my engine rarely breaks 1500rpm unless I am climbing a good hill
efficiency goes hands down to the electric all it uses is electric 0 engine drag
and power consumtion is negatable the best top of the line elctric fans pull >20amps or about 240watts wich is less than most of the stero amps that guys put in there rigs

The Tow package does'nt change the electric to a manual fan. It has the stock electric and a manual fan as well, so it clearly increases the cooling capacity since it is an extra fan and not a replacement.

BTW I have the tow package and it comes with the following:
1. Tow Hitch and 7pin wiring
2. Transmission Cooler
3. Power Steering Cooler
4. Heavy Duty Engine cooling(This is just the extra Manual Fan)

Yea an electric fan is something the TJ guys do as an upgrade. While in 4 low creeping around rocks on a hot day my Rubi gets hot. I like to run the AC when the wife is with me, but on a hot day thats impossible to do unless we are moving along fairly good. Once you slow down, the heat starts building up. Electric fans work 10x better.

This thread is about towing, not about rock crawling...

The mechanical fan assists the electric fan in the KJ to improve the cooling ability. If the electrical fan was all that is needed, the mechanical fan wouldn't be installed from the factory on "tow-pacakge" equiped KJ's

It's OK. I could have worded it a little nicer than I did - I suppose I just get 'bent outta shape' over the cooling system sometimes.

LONG LIVE THE LIBERTY!

Clutches seem to be the weak point.

not that the cluch is week but rather a problem with the driver
the MFG knows that 90% of the drivers will hit cluch and break when stoping wich will force all the breaking on the breaks and none on the drive train
also it has been my experance that most people dont know how to take off with a manual and tend to ride the cluch more than needed
none of this matters when you are not towing or towing a light load but a heavy load it does

if the autos realy were better at towing then over the road trucks ,18 wheelers, would all have them insted 99% have manuals
and they haul 80,000#+ all day every day and there cluch surfce is not 10X bigger than the one in a KJ

good example is when I had my ford ranger ,4.0 V6 5 speed 3.73's on 30" mudders, my buddy and his wife had the same model year explorer but with ever thing the same only differance was that they had an auto it was rated to tow 5,000# and my truck only 4,000# on the way to pensicola FL in july towing a good size boat ,18' I think, they could not run with the AC or the truck would over heat
I told them that I would tow it and see what happens 200+ miles on the same tank of fuel and running at 70mph+ and the temp guage never moved
I did use extreme care after the first time I had to stop and I did not want to but other wise no biggie

I agree with you Jason. I believe it takes less power to turn a manual trans than an automatic one as well.

You don't need the tow package to get all of these options. All automatic Libertys come with the transmission cooler and the Renegade also comes with the power steering cooler and heavy duty engine cooling. Since the transmission cooler comes on all automatic Libertys, I wouldn't necessarily include it as part of the tow package.

Well, to get this something back on track, I have a few questions....
1) Can (whoever started this thread) give us a little bit of a writeup of the hitch install? Electronics, and the mechanical install.
2) So if I'm understanding right, the factory clutch is good for 5K lbs towing?
3) If I keep it at freeway speeds, the tranny and engine will not overheat?

4) Is anyone else with a 6-speed (mines a 06) notice a 1-2 shift hangup when the tranny is cold? Jason, what sort of tranny fluid would you reccomend? Is the synthetic mobil worth using?

Thanks!
-Mark

Every standard trans I ever drove is "sticky" when cold. My atv even does it.

1.) I can't help you with here... (never installed a hitch on the Liberty)
2.) The best way to aproach the limit of the clutch disk would be pulling different weights starting smaller and working your way up to the 5,000 pound figure. I'd be willing to venture that if you're not slipping the clutch a great deal while you get started the disk and pressure plate should hold on - but of course if you smell that funny smell... :x
3.) Correct - there is enough air moving past your radiator to almost self cool the engine. The transmission oil should do just fine as long as you aren't driving across the country in record time. Also - with the trailer, the e-fan might kick on once in a while but it's not really that bad at all (the extra weight once you're moving)
4.) I don't have a cool six speeder transmission... sometimes I wish I did though.

1) There are 3 bolts per side of the hitch that used, these go into pre-threaded holes in the KJ's frame. These are the same mounting locations as the gas tank skids. 5 are very easy, 1 (if I recall right its the middle one on the passenger side) is blocked oddly by the exhaust...its do able but not easy. I installed a Draw-Tite high and their T-Connect 4 flat wiring. For the T-Connect it only took popping off the tail lights to plug into the factory wiring, no splicing or anything.

2) My research showed the Draw-Tite is the ONLY hitch with a 5000lbs rating (7500 with weight distribution). All other hitches (OEM, Resse, Hidden Hitch, etc) were 5000lbs WITH a weight distribution kit, without the weight distribution kit the recommended max was 3500lbs.

3) I've never had issues with a trailer weight pushing 5000lbs with just the add on hitch, no special coolers/fans/etc on my '04 Columbia Edition.

What does the draw-tite run?

I would like to get a hitch to tow project cars. I still like VW's and would love to get my hands on a clean Corrado VR6 shell to clean up, but I wouldn't want to pay a towing company to tow it for me.

I got mine From drawtite-hitches.com (link to liberty hitches)

Another reason I chose the Draw-Tite was the hitch extended farther from the bumper meaning it was easier to clear the rear tire. My Draw-Tite with a 10.5" ball mount puts the ball beyond the spare tire (even with my 265/70-16s).

I use a car dolly and tow my Mustang around for with the factory hitch but flat towing might be different...

Anyway - http://search.cartserver.com/search/sea ... Y&GO=GO%21

Should have all the hitches for a Liberty
