I've been looking into a roof rack for my CRD. The ones I've come across are too cheap or cost 400.00+. Does this sound like a reasonable price? I thought it seemed a little steep myself. Thought you guys might have some suggestions on ware too find a good reasonable roof rack. The one i was looking at for 400.00+ is at www.4x4connection.com. Thank for any help.

Somewhere on here there is a thread about a $99 rack(do a search).I have a Defender rack and it cost me $400 so it seems to be about the norm.Just remember you get what you pay for.

Depends what you are going to use it for. i have one of the BMG racks that a lot of us got for real cheap a good while ago. I have had 3 tires on wheels up there, moved my wife to Boston and had stuff piled about 2 1/2 foot high on it (4 huge suit cases 225 lbs plus) and no problems, so just depends

That's one of the good ones. That company has a great history with the Jeep community. If you need something that will take you to way out there and back, it's a good one. Some of the safari racks from South Africa and other places are $1200 and more, but they carry around 10 times the load our roof rails are rated for. I don't look at price as much as I look at how important it is for this equipment to perform. If it fails me at the worst time than I've really spent my money poorly.

I picked up my Garvin Wilderness rack locally from a private seller for dirt cheap; retail was at least $400. It was off an '80s Mitsubishi Montero. It's really strong and doesn't flex at all, and it's rated for 500 lbs, but I would never put more than two or three hundred pounds of gear up there since the rack itself is just mounted to my stock roof rails. Even then, I bet 300 lbs would be pushing it. What's nice is it's so big that I spread everything out and don't have to stack anything. I think I've only needed to put 200 pounds up there, and it hasn't had problems yet. Using the stock rails is crap though, in my opinion. I just wish someone would make aftermarket steel rails to replace the plastic with some sturdier mounting points

If your rack is long enough, you could make feet for it to mount to the factory rail mounting bolts like some of the KJWest guys did.
