Well, the US Goverment has changed the way that they figure out MPG.

Jeep Liberty

Old MPG = 16 City 22 Highway. Average = 18

New MPG = 14 City 20 Highway. Averange = 16

Sweet - that is what I've been getting all along and it only took the mathmaticians 4 years to figure out how to observe real world numbers.

So.... half jokin, half serious....

Owners of the new RX8 got some money back because the vehicle doesn't meet the claimed HP ratings after government testing... I think that it was something like $1,000... does that mean that on top of chrystler being for sale, they are going to have to pay all of us (the 850,000 liberty owners) some sort of I'm sorry payment because some pencil pusher wasn't capable of entering the correct figures into a calculator and will end up costing us 2 miles per gallon.... which transalates to approx 25-30 miles per tank, and at least $2.50 extra for every time we empty and fill our tanks?

Or was it to avoid us paying some sort of gas guzzler tax when we purchase our new vehicles..... or was it to avoid giving us the tax break that we deserve for keeping petrol companies profitable?

Bah, whatever. We all knew that we weren't getting the claimed MPG. At least someone fessed up to it. And it's going to keep me busy. One of my biggest customers makes parts for oil pipelines. Yaaay for free trade.

Sounds like a conspiracy to hurt Jeep and the Liberty.

I easily get better than that with lift, bigger tires, skids (including the much heavier AllJ skid), wire basket, Renegade roof lights, and a bunch of equipment in the back...and I am talking city, not highway.

Aighty, gunna chime in now i reckon....I seem to be getting mileage at around 13.8 to 14.7....all city miles. Now could that be a product of the 255/70/16 tires and my gearing? Of course the occassional lead foot action to get around the nuisance driver that doesn't know what he/she wants to do next to aggravate traffic might also lead to said mileage. But could it be hurting me that much compared to you guys running just a smaller sized tire? I drive about 50 miles a day back and forth from school, work and home. Or could it be that my roof basket is also hurting it that much too??

From what I've read, the "new math" has to do with more "real world" conditions as opposed to sitting on a dyno type device. Now takes into account things like air conditioning, open windows, hills, stop and go, fat americans, etc.

last time we took a long drive ( from cincinnati ohio to austin texas and back ) i got 19 -20 mpg. have 3 in lift and big tires. did 75 80 on the highways. now to be honest, i crammed as much gas into the tank as i could, right up to the filler neck.. still, 19 - 20 all the way there and all the way back.

i cant complain... if i was worried that much about gas mileage, i would've bought a jetta tdi or something.

Doubtful. They did this for all cars...not just the KJ.

Maybe they just figured that more folks are driving with their foot in it. My mileage is closer to the "Old" figures; actually a little bit better.

I just finished a 2200 mile road trip. On the first leg (unloaded) I traveled 750 miles, which included a stretch up though the mountains (light snow) in Full Time 4 Wheel, and averaged 24.6 MPG. On the remainder of the trip, the KJ was loaded to the gills with my son's stuff and mileage dropped to 20. I was also putting my foot into it more trying to keep up with my son in his little sports car. He couldn't resist playin' in the twisties.

They are changing all the mileage fiqures, even my boss who has one of those Toyota Prius (spelling??) changed from like 60 mpg to 48 or something like that. Hes not happy but then he never got the claimed anyways. Seems like it is more REAL WORLD ratings

I think the new figures are more realistic. I (compulsively) track the mileage on our ’05 Liberty. In nearly 19,700 miles driven in the city we have average 15.61 mpg. We have done as badly as 11.67 mpg on one tank. The biggest variable is who drives. When I commute to work, about 19 miles each way, I average about 16.5 mpg. When my wife drives, mostly short trips (<5 miles) to the grocery store and through school pickup lanes, we get only about 13 mpg. Both of us drive the Jeep fairly gently.

We have put an additional 5,749 miles on the highway and averaged 18.39 mpg. Normally, when we are on the highway we are traveling heavy – 4 occupants w/luggage (sometimes on top) – and we cruise at about 70-75mph. Our best tank of gas averaged 22.15 mpg. We were going uphill but must have had a tail wind.

PS – I experimented with acetone as an additive, but it was a bust.

Whoever just posted today, for some reason, you double-posted. I tried to delete one of the copies and both vanished.
