I dont have any pic of it but I recently towed a Mini Excavator on a braked trailer with my CRD, and that was with the 245/75/16's and heavy booty 16x8 steelies on too. It weighed 4400Lbs + around 80ltrs of fuel, 2 Adults and one 50Kg Rhodesian Ridgeback in the car !!

She smashed it 8) ...................

Gti comes at 3100 for a manual and 3150 for an auto. If the trailer was 2200, then we're over slighltly. I towed an exact combination but I did it with a Ram 1500 (Hemi) and it felt heavy. I kept it at 75 too. Even on the Ram, the rear was sagging. You're right those trailers are really front heavy.

As for the 5000lb limit, it is merely a safety guide line. They take into account braking and acceleration. If you know what you're doing you could probably go up to 10,000 but with an WD hitch, and offcourse some better cooling for the engine.

The curb weight of my old 2000 GTI GLS 1.8t was 2811.

I made 3 trips like that, all with varying hills (some quite steep) from Central PA to NJ and Central PA to Update NY. The Uhaul trailers really force a lot of tongue weight because the car has to be all the way forward. Regardless I figure total tow weight to be ~5000lbs and I was doing ~75mph on all trips.[/quote]

had you backed that car on the trailer, your weight would have been much improved. those things have about 60% or more in the front.

Had you ever used a uhaul trailer you'd know they are not designed for that.

Have they changed U-haul trailers in the past few years? I hauled a 1972 chevy pickup with a 402big block on a uhaul backwards for over 1000 miles from MT to CO with out any issues. What is keeping you from backing it on, as long as you still keep enough weight to the front to have force down on the tongue so you don't have it pulling up on the ball?

Not trying to be a jerk with this reponse, I just want to know so I am not caught by surprise next time I have to rent one.

For my car and at it's ride height (2" lower than stock) even with the rear bumper off the wheel straps could not be used correctly to ensure the car was held on the car correctly.
