A while back I was able to find a bike rack that mounts to the hitch and was able to swing to the side. Now all I can find are the ones that fold straight down to the ground. I've been looking back through all the links on the board, can anyone offer some help?

Also, if you have used one of the two hitch mounted bik racks, what was your opinion of it?

TIA

My Dad has the hitch mounted version that folds down but I wasn't a fan because you still have to take the bikes off to fold the hitch... I mean how can you access the cargo area if there is a pile of bikes laying on or near the ground???

I have the spare tire version - it'll be used for the first time this spring.

Both Yakima and Thule make them, but if I am not mistaken, they do not extend far enough back to clear the spare.

I just bought the Thule Spare Me bike rack that mounts to the spare tire. It only holds 2 bikes but you dont have to hassle with folding out\down.

I have the Thule fold down and it is one that unlike others, extends back far enough that it clears the spare. However, with an OEM hitch the vertical part of the rack is about 1.5" too tall to still clear the spare. I am going to fabricate an adapter to mount it lower.

As far as access si concerned I can normally reach most of the things I need out of the back when the bikes are on through the side door or the flipper. Most of the time I would need to fold it down the bikes would already be unloaded. I also have mounted a front DrawTite hitch and may actually carry the bikes on the front as often as on the back.

What's the max the spare tire carrier will manage?

It will carry 2 bikes and a recommended max of 75 lbs. Its strong and built really well.
