I just factory-ordered a Jeep Liberty Sport w/ Auto Tranny.
I got skids and tow hooks as options.

I didn't notice until later that there was an off road group that included heavy duty engine cooling and power steering cooling. I asked my dealer to change my order, but I was too late.

Is this extra cooling important?
What exactly does it consist of----does it cool the transmission?
Can I add it at a later time if needed?

IMO it is worth having the extra cooling. It sounds like they just used the off road group to get you the skids and hooks, it only cost a little more for the additional cooling you now have. Welcome!

The problem is I didn't get the off road group. I ordered skids and tow hooks separately.
I later saw the off road group on Edmunds and tried to change my order, but it was too late.
So no extra cooling for me.

From what I've been reading I wish I would have gotten it; sounds like it can add some years to your vehicle.[/quote]

Yours might already have the tranny cooler because I think all autos come w/ it now. The engine cooling is an extra manual fan which you can add on. Only other thing you might want to add is the power steering cooler. These things all come factory w/ the offroad group or the tow package. So if you have the tow package you should already have it all.

No tow package for me.
Just skids & hooks.

So do you think I'll have any problems with overheating?
I'll be in high elevations and doing some offroading.
Will not be towing anything.

What exactly am I missing by not having the extra cooling and what is the benefit?

From what I've read I don't have:
-an extra fan
-power steering cooler
-auxillary oil cooler

Is that it?
Should I think about adding these things in the future?

I think that every KJ has a power steering cooler but they do not all have an external trany cooler

I have wheeled mine in south LA with out the extra cooling stuff and the AC on and no over heat

Jeep Libertys with the 42RLE transmission have an auxiliary transmission cooler in front of the engine radiator. Libertys with the 45RFE transmission have a cooler built into the engine radiator. Liberty CRDs with the 545RFE have a combination transmission cooler & A/C condenser in front of the intercooler and engine radiator. Libertys with the NSG370, NV1500, and NV3500 manual transmissions don't have a cooler because manual transmissions lack a fluid pump.

The Off-Road Group and Tow Group come with the power steering cooler and engine driven fan.

They stopped putting the PS cooler in starting in '04(?) I think,it's now a option.I highly recommend a tranny cooler for the auto, heat kills a auto fast. The mechanical fan,in my opinion is overrated but can't hurt either. You can add a aftermarket tranny cooler pretty easy,I did and it only took about a 1/2 hour.

Thanks for the info.
Since it sounds like I already have the auxillary transmission cooler what other cooling components am I missing from the Offroad group besides the power steering cooler?

You're right, the brochures in the "Renegade Package" thread show the Off-Road and Towing packages including "heavy-duty engine cooling with auxiliary oil cooler for automatic transmission." The power steering cooler must be standard....

You're probably right, but I already ordered one last Sunday.
Should I have a garage add some extra cooling once I receive it?
I'm still not positive if it has a tranny cooler included. I've read some places yes, and some no.
