One of my BFG T/A KO's was taken out by:

Image

It didn't blow out but was not repairable. There was 4/32 of wear on the tire. Costco order a new one and I had to pay prorated price. So I drive home from costco with the new tire thinking life is good. When I pull in the garage I smell brakes over heated and the wheel with the new tire is warmer than the others (left rear). When I jack up the rear end I can feel more drag on that side.

Asked thejeep service manager what he thought. He advised 4/32 difference can cause the limited slip differentyial to heat up. Moved the new tiire to the front for now. Took a drive and all was well. Will know for sure tomorrow after the morning commute if that was the problem

So now if I want to keep rotating the tires every 6k I need to buy another new tire for the front.

Then this raises another question. How will the full time 4 wheel mode react to fronts 4/32 bigger? Any thoughts??

Then I was wonder if my comprehensive insure will pay for at least the one tire?

You have an 06, which means you do not have a limited slip diff..

Ive seen a few posts about the rear calipers 'locking' up. Ive not read any about it happening on an 06 though. :?

That is a great question. So do you buy two tires now that you have a new on the rotation? where both new tires are either both in front or rear now???

if you dont have limited slip then im sure you can turn off your traction control or whatever gizmo those come with now and find a situation and do a one wheel burnout.

then again those are pretty expensive crappy tires so i guess your best bet would just be to leave it on the side that wears the most and hope it doesnt cause any electronic probs. usually the right side on rear wears more and around here, the right front, mountain roads.

Did you get five of the BFGs originally (four on the ground and a spare)? If so and the spare is still new then I'd throw it on the ground opposite the other new tire, let them both wear down then continue the rotations. You'll just want to make sure they stay on opposite sides of the same axle so they don' give you any more problems.

It is an 05 with LSD, I don't know enough about how the full time works to know if 4/32 differnce would cause any issues. That would be a wierd coincidence for the caliper to have issues after a tire change. Over tighting the wheels can cause some rotor issue but they were not over tightened, I checked myself plus watched them use a torque wrench

Since you have a LSD it could effect your LSD,try keeping the new tire about 2-3 psi lower than the other tires until it wears down some or if you rotate in your spare, put the spare on and use the new tire as a spare only till you get new tires.

Sounds like kind of a sucky system when you can't replace a tire w/o worrying about your diff overheating. I mean, in the real world, wouldn't you occasionally get a flat and have to change a tire? You'd think DC would think of this type of thing during the design phase.

No way around it with LSD's,the tires need to be the same hieght or the LSD thinks one wheel is loosing traction and lock the axles toghether and then unlocking causing wear and heat.Sometimes you can't have your cake and eat it to.

wow thats a big bolt!

4/32.... .125" thats enough to heat things up?

could it be a bad wheel bearing?

hmm, for some reason I thought for sure it said you had an 06 in your sig? Anyway, dont pay attention to that first post.

Either way, Im not to sure why the LS would cause the wheel to heat up.. That diff would need to be really hot to do that, then both sides would be hot. :?

When I bought them I orderd 5 but only 4 showed up. No 5th to rotate in. So my dilema is will 2 new ones have adverse efect on the select track transfer case when using full time mode?

I do not think that 4/32 or 1/8 of an inch will make a diff. in the grand skeem of things
I know that I have or at one time had tires that are worn more than that on the same axel and my LSD works fine
I also do not think that it will even be a concern to the full time 4wd system nor the part time

Think of it like this your drive train has some slack in it all the time some rigs more than others but from one end of an axel to the other if you break down how far 1/16 of an inch at the end of a tire will move the center of your axel it will be nill

Just my .02 on it

If you get the other new one within a few hundred miles and keep them on the same end of the vehicle I can't see it causing any problems.

To piggyback the topic, i eventually plan on putting on BF Goodrich all terains in the next size up, 235 I believe, but plan on keeping the original spare due to $. If I get a flat and put say 200 miles on the stock 225 spare, will this be a problem to the drive train etc.? I guess for sure I would turn esp? off.
Thanks,
Steve

How in the world could 4/32's of an inch really effect your LSD? I understand how an LSD works and all but, come on, there is no way that all 4 tires when new were exactly the same size. It's physically impossible to have a manufactuing system hold such a tight tolerance on a mass production part like a tire.

If this 1 tire truely is causing all kinds of problems than, I'd move it to the front and not engage your T-case for a couple of thousand miles so that it can wear down without ruining your LSD clutches.

Hooperwish - It's OK to use a temporary tire of a different size - but not for any longer than required to get your other tire patched up back into operation. I can't comment on the ESP, I have yet to own a vehicle with an ESP system in it.

Is that 4/32 of tread depth lost? If so you have lost 8/32 overall diameter. Or 1/4". Maybe thats a better way to look at it.

30" tire has a circumference of about 94.25"
29.75" would be 93.46

you have a difference of .79" per rotation

http://www.4lo.com/calc/gearspeedo.htm

punch in the tire sizes there and it looks like you have .5 mile difference every 60 miles traveled. Doesnt sound like enough to make a difference to me, but maybe it is.

I would suggest to run it on the front both left and right for a few rotationsor until it wears down close to the size of the others, as long as it doesnt cause braking problems it wont hurt a thing up there. It wouldnt hurt a thing in the back if it werent for the LSD. Unless perhaps the larger diameter is causing the brake on that wheel to do more work?
