We think we've got it bad with our recalls. Ford's new diesel trucks are throwing flames out the tail pipe  It seems they are having trouble with the partical filters  That would definetly stop tailgating :D

I wish my CRD threw flames instead of black smoke when I jam on the throttle. Time to rig up some propane injection into the exhaust and a spark plug.

Actually it's the new 2008 6.4 Powerstrokes.... Our all knowing government thought that particulate filters would be a good idea, you know, kinda like the catalytic converter  ..... Seems the particles collect in there till things are warm enough.... Then they are turned to ash... Guess the trapped particles aren't the only thing being turned to ash....

Let me guess endurance, you're a Cummins or Duramax guy.... Doesn't really matter which, they all look the same in my reaview....

Actually Im a VW TDI and Mercedes Diesel guy, but if I would have to choose between a Duramax Cummins and Powerjunk I would probably go with Cummins. I dont know, I guess I just like Cummins the most because they have a long experience with building Diesel engines for big applications.

I like to call them PowerHopes. My dad hates it when I do that (he's got and '00). The 6.0 is better know as the 6.Oh-No. (Just some good humor. You Ford guys don't throw stones). Actually, there where 3 incidence of this. 2 where caused by leaking injectors and the other a cracked turbo shaft. Both problems lead to fuel in the particulant trap that ignited. One caused a grass fire. The funny thing is Ford's answer is to reflash the ECM so if there is too much heat in the particulant trap it powers down so you can pull to the side of the road to allow for cooling. This is not good for Ford Diesels.

I suggest ORM & ULSD to get rid of the smoke.

Just messin with ya Endurance... The reality of it is both the Cummins and Powerstroke are actually the real players... Cummins has made an obvious name for themselves.... The Powerstroke is made by International/Man (Interstar)... Both those companies work in a triad research co-op with Cat.... Man was/is a German company of which Rudolf Diesel was employed when the "modern day" version of the diesel was developed by he and Man.

It was a take you're pick from my point of view... The Duramax is actually a good motor built by Isuzu... It's apparent durability is compliments of the fact that the basic engine has been employed in Japan and Europe for many years... It's a pretty mature engine design at this point...

Honestly Cummins was my second choice, not because of the engine but because of the truck... The Fords are just more stout... I needed a truck to comfortably haul a 5th wheel/truck combination that can tip the scales pretty close to 20,000 lbs.... The Ford 3/4 ton capacities were pretty close to the other two one ton capacities... But most of the time it's my daily driver so I didn't really want a one ton...

Anyway, just like to stir the pot every now and then...

Cheers,

Ken....

Yeah being from germany myself I know MAN pretty good. They are supposed to make the best trucks in europe, but as y'all know opinions are like...

Chimney fires are not a good thing. At work, the last 90 transit buses we got have particulate traps (CAT C-9, no EGR, no VGT uses two turbos). We had problems with the PT plugging from day 1. These can not be left to idle more than a few minutes as they will run cold, make excess soot and plug the traps. The solution is they are being re-fitted with a new PT's with a catalytic converter to keep engine & exhaust temps high enough incinerate the soot. The next generation of PT's have fuel injectors & igniters to clean themselves but once it lights for cleaning it has to burn @ 30 min (and engine has to be left running) to complete the cleaning cycle.

Several years ago, not too long before the CRD was introduced, I came across a google cached copy of a diesel engine engineering document, discussing various methods of controlling pm and NOx. It seems that by raising combustion temperature on DI diesel engines and optimizing other burn parameters (no egr at all) to maximum burn efficiency, engineers found they could achieve in-cylinder PM reduction to a point where little particulate control was required downstream. Power and fuel efficiency increased as well.

The problem was NOx levels increased due to higher burn temperatures, the same higher burn temperatures that eliminated much of the soot and other pm, created more NOx and wouldn't meet T2B5 NOx requirements. This was before DC/Bosch had SCR with ADBlue, and Honda had downstream plasma exhaust treatment.

I wonder if the resulting extra warranty expense on engine components caused by egr accelerated wear will eventually result in different emissions designs. Designs that would include the elimination of egr, use of in-cylinder PM control, combined with either reactants like Adblue or plasma treatment in the exhaust stream. By raising burn temperatures to handle most of the PM in-cylinder, and adding downstream NOx treatment, it would seem to offer the best of both worlds.

There's your basic diesel PMAT feature on demo :-)

Particulate Matter Afterburner Technology at work...

No spark plug needed!!!!
