Anyone know anything about the durability and reliability of the CVT transmission?

I was wondering if it overheats like an auto can, and if it is known to have any problems.

I'm thinking of getting rid of my Liberty because of the problems I'm having and reading the user reviews of Compass and Patriot everyone seems to love them.

I know it's not a "real" jeep, but if I get the trail-rated version that would be more than enough trail capability for what I do.

The cvt tranny hasn't been out long enough to get a real sense of durability I don't think. So far it seems ok, time will tell. Sure the patriot is a real jeep as is the compass, just designed to do different things. Thats like saying a ford focus isn't a real ford, because it can't do what an F-150 can. From what I've been reading, the patriot is a heck of a soft trail machine and will serve the purpose of what alot of people do. Don't get caught up in the stereo typing, willys made a jeepster in the early 50's, it was only 2wd, but it's still a jeep, the postal jeeps are jeeps. Some xj's and comanche's came in 2wd, does that make them not real jeeps, sure thier jeeps. You do best what suits your needs.

What problems are you having out of your libby? They seem to be built fairly sturdy..

CVT is almost like the cluch thing on a go cart
How ling do you think it will hold up?

I know that the polaris ATV's have a CVT and they "bring the suck" big time
I have a suzuki atv that is going on 8 years old and dont think twice about going through water/mud up to the seat and it has NEVER let me down but at the same time I have pulled more polarises out of the same stuff then I can count
The fan belt gets wet and they stop going

I do not know if the car version would be the same but here in south Louisiana if that is so then every time it rains they will be replacing something in those tranys

oh yeah they are probably drive by wire also
if you want a jeep but dont want problems I hate to say it but you are SOL
jeep's ,and every car made for that matter, will have some down sides you need to weigh the good VS the bad and see what wins
This is the reason why we bought a KJ then 6 month later replaced a FULLY loaded ford ranger (FX4 the works) with a TJ
we started wheelin the ranger and every trip something broke now we have the TJ and the problems with it are due to my own stupid self
The Kj is by no means a "trail mahine" but it does well and where I can go in the TJ with little to no problem the ranger would struggle
and it was lifted locked regeared and running 33's

Think about what you WANT befor you buy

I figured they would also be drive-by-wire.
If I get rid of my Liberty I will be very careful about what I get as far as the test drive and user reviews.
I'll probably stick with Jeep just because no other company has a vehicle that appeals to me.

I know that all of the electronic stuff is here to stay, but it just isn't working right on mine. Maybe the good engineers went to work on the new 2008 Liberty and the Patriot and the flunkies worked on the 2007 Liberty and added some stuff they shouldn't have.

if you just want awd wagony thing look at a subaru forester or a the New Suzuki SX4, but if you are dead set on an SUV hyundai tuscan and Suzuki Grand Vitara are quite nice too and both have great warranties.

If you were looking to purchase the patriot and were worried about the transmission than just buy an extended warranty. I think everyone worries about any transmission when they buy a new car or SUV because that is probably one of the most expensive things to replace. Like all parts of any vehicle, the CVT has been durability tested to withstand 150,000 miles of abuse. They offer better fuel economy and an infinate number of gear rations.

I love it when people diss stuff and haven't even driven the Compass or Patriot yet.

The Compass is a very well designed vehicle. It does everything that it needs to and the CVT is not a problem. The Patriot is just as good (even better?) because you can get the really cool trail rated version that comes with 1 extra inch of ground clearance, reinforced suspension parts plus HDC and all of the traction control goodies.

Sure they aren't as big as the Liberty, but you have to remember that DCX has basically turned a Dodge Neon (the replacement) into a seriously well rounded vehicle that has enough capability for just about 90% of the people out there

As far as the polaris goes, I know the older ones had problems, but the newer ones I havnt seen a problem with them in mud and water, they just go like mad. Most people run them in 4HI when they should be in 4LO. As far as the Patriot CVT goes, I would go for it, but also play it safe and get the extended warranty.

And there's nothing wrong with that... It's the same thing I would do. (it's what my sister DID also)

I think they will sell a lot of patriots.

It will appeal to the same people that are buying the Rav4 etc.

The Compass on the other hand I do not get....

Jason Thompson, I wheel my ranger hard and it goes anywhere I need to take it and I have yet to break anything. I find them to be very capable as far as small trucks go. I know this is not about rangers, just had to defend my baby ha ha. As far as the kj, it is also very trail capable, makes me wonder what some of you guy's are trying to do with your rigs. If it's the extreme stuff, then thiers no factory rig capable of extreme conditions without modifications, even a rubicon. I go up in the mountains, point my rig and it goes, if I get into a situation where it won't, then I pick another line. What happen to just trail ridding and site seeing, some camping and just enjoying the out doors? Now it seems all rigs are judged on thier ability to climb rock cliffs and boulders. KJ, patroit, ranger, whatever is capable of haveing a great time offroad and doing the trails. The willys flatfenders that sarted it all had 60 hp, open diffs and some weak parts, but no one says thier not very offroad capable. Ground clearence and traction is the secert to offroad capability on any rig, pick your lines with that in mind that best suits your vehicle and have a blast. Keep wheeling simple, do have to put dana 60's front and rear and 10" of lift to have a good time, of course not.

Ugh.............The trail-rated Patriot only gets about 22mpg average.
This would be fine with me, but the gas tank is only 13.5 gallons.
That's only 297 miles on a tank of gas.
Doesn't that seem awfully low?

yes because you'll probably put gas in with 2-3 gallons left, so about every 200 miles you'd be looking for a gas station

That is what I got in the stock KJ, about 280 - 290 miles per tank. (don't know what it is now with the lift and tires though)

Lets see....

Liberty = 18.5 gallons of gas = around 250 miles mixed driving
Patriot = 13.5 gallons of gas = around 250 miles mixed driving

Seems like the better option financially still
