I confess. My wife is one of these so-called suburbanites that HAD to have a Liberty.
When her 98 Eddie Bauer Explorer got hit and was in the shop, the rental she got was Liberty. After a few days of driving it, she was hooked!
The Ex started having mechanical ills about a year later, and my wife said she wanted a new Liberty. As good consumers, we checked out most of the competition and settled on a new RM Liberty.
Her Lib rides GREAT compared to the Top-of-the-line Explorer she had before! I couldn't stand riding in that thing! Rode worse that my 98 2500 Dodge Ram w/Cummins Turbo-Diesel!
Tell ya what though, when the 1st heavy snow came, I told my wife I'm taking her Lib for a "Test Drive".
I took the Lib out and gave it one-helluva thrashing and could NOT get the little turd stuck! From that point forward, I too fell in love with it! BTW, I'm originally from the Pittsburgh area and I KNOW driving very well!
So yea, it IS a HEAVY little turd and gets the SAME MPG as my BIG 2500 Dodge Ram, but the peace of mind I get from knowing my wife is driving a little HEAVY vehicle is priceless to me.
My only REAL point of contention with her Lib is the interior is like a sardine can! That and the STATIC electricity that gets produced EVERYTIME I slide out of it's cloth covered seats!!!! OUCH !!!! LOL !!
