Could be your tires rubbing. Mine sometimes do this (machine-gun, rapid-fire pop pop pop pop pop pop pop pop...) while reversing with the steering wheel turned all the way to one side.

Did you torque all your suspension bushings while the KJ was still in the air, when you put that Rusty's kit on? Suppose to put it on the ground and settle to "ride height" before torquing everything. Mine made that same noise when the sway arm end-link bushings went out.

Could be the outer CV joint. One test is to be in a parking lot and turn all the way to stop while backing. If it makes the noise, could be bad CV joint/shaft.

Check the sway bar end link bolts, they will cause a 'poping" sound if not torqued correctly.

After removing my front bumper, I know have a popping noise when reversing and turning all the way to one side. I think its rubbing either on the fog door or the pinch weld plastic that is loose. Time for some RL skinks and front bumper!!
