Talk them down...$22,000 is a bit high...they probably only gave $17,500 +/- $1000 for it as a Trade-In

hey bob, welcome to the club, I would decide first if you are enough of a gear-head to keep up with the inherent drawbacks of this rig. biggest I have found is their small number and the lack of experience stateside with a small displacement, high tech diesel. I spent just over 20K on mine with the options you are looking at minus sunroof, with 8000+ miles, found it on a toyota lot in SLC.

this site is a gold mine for technical help and ideas, not to mention some scary stories regarding dealers, recalls, flaws etc....

On the plus side, they get around 28 mpg interstate, tow a lot of weight, are fun to drive, and comfortable, not to mention a capable jeep. I really like the biodiesel idea too, keeps some of our money stateside and helps out our farmers, and the environment.

good luck with the decision, I am really glad I found my CRD, and would not get rid of it for the world, but I have a genetic disposition to tinkering on rigs, and this one fascinates me. :D

sounds like a good match then. keep looking around on this site, there are a ton of great people here that have bigger brains than most that are looking for all the little things that will make the CRD a long lived powerhouse.

My three months of searching for the right price online got me thinking that I would have to pay closer to 30K for a CRD in the northwest. I did notice that prices were 5-10K less for the same rig east of the mississippi, and I just happened onto mine at Mark Miller Toyota (SLC) two weeks after it went online, so I lucked out. 22thou sounds like a good deal to me for the pacific NW.

I don't feel too bad about the price, seen one comp to it for $37,000, and lots at the $25,000 range.

If you check on ebay.com you will see most are around $20,000 or a bit less...depends on mileage. Good Luck!

One thing you need to know.

This is a great forum full of knowledge. But not many folks post up how wonderful and troublefree their CRDs have been. Most of what you'll see is is problems. These things are machines, and any problem can be fixed. With things like the ORM (off road mod) and EHM (elephant hose mode) or ProVent (accomplishes the same thing as the EHM, but costs more), you can actually avoid quite a few problems.

I've seen lots of complaints about the transmission, so I did some research on it. It's the same tranny that sits behind the Hemi V8 in pickups. It's a stout unit. Not many problems with the trannys. The torque converter has been a weak point, but the warranty will replace the factory one with an updated one at no charge. After that, if it fails out of warranty, then you can most likely get an aftermarket unit that's stronger.

I think these little engines will outlast the chassis. I swear, I don't listen to the radio much. I love to hear that diesel clatter. It's music to my ears! :)

Welcome!

We love our 2005 CRD.

It is not without it's "quirks" and growing pains. But it performs VERY well, and as long as you don't listen to the BS that dealerships will try to tell you, you should have lots of luck.

Remember to use better oil than what is in the owners manual, I recommend at a minimum a CI4+ oil. Oil is really really important in this engine due to the EGR and the turbo.

And I agree with what others have said. We usually only post with problems. Very rarely will someone post just to say "Still happy".

The best thing is that it is such a rare vehicle I expect it to keep being a conversation starter for years to come.. :)

Thanks to all! I have been on a few Dodge/Diesel bords for a while so I know all about only seeing the bad. I have learned a lot here all ready. Just got done cleaning the MAP sencer, it was bad! The EGR control valve was changed out in Jan and both recalls (torque converter and LBJ)have been done. Still trying to figure out what oul to use, Rottela T 5W- 40 was recomended and that is what I plan on using right now.

I'd combine an oil change with the ORM (unplugging the MAF). Nice to keep the oil and engine clean.

With 15K I might also think about a tranny fluid flush or a check of those fluids. Some of previous drivers might not have shown a lot of love to your Jeep...plus I think there were some issues. Also, make sure the Stealer didn't forget to fill your fluids back! Seems to be a rash of that!

Personally, all I have had is an EGR replacement und warrentee. Now, with ORM running full time, I don't have to worry anymore. My issues are only silly ones (why does the darn seat stain?) and I mostly come here to listen and be enlightened.

Also, if you are very lucky, you might spot MrMopar dropping hints about the future DC diesel releases and the very mysterious "Diesel Hybrid" prototype DC is working on. That alone i worth the price of admission....
