The brake warning light comes on after the rear wheels lose traction and stays on until the jeep is restarted. The first time I reported it to the dealer and they checked codes only to tell me this is normal. I refused to pay the bill for this ?service? Normal or not, I'm curious about why this happens. Can someone fill me in?[/b]

I have ESP (traction control) on my CRD. When I see the wheelspin indicator on the dash, it is usually momentary, and turns off when the ESP regains traction.
I typcially turn-off ESP via the switch on the top of the steering column, and that illuminates the idicator until the next cycle of the ignition. ESP defaults on, and must be manually turned off.

I may not be telling you anything you don't already know, but if that is staying on on its own, I think the dealer is mistaken.

My 05 does this too. The abs light comes on when you spin a lot, and won't go off until the car is restarted. No ESP of course, being an 05.

My 05 has done the same thing a few times when spinning excessively usually snow or ice, but has not done it in about 5 months. Engine restart clears it.

I think it's an ABS thing. Rear wheels spinning, front not equals front wheels skidding so release brakes on front until they turn. Can't get them to turn equals fault. Set light. I had to have my 05 smog tested on a dyno and that set the light.

Since my CRD is an 05, I'll go with the ABS explanation. I do wonder if they aren't making cars too 'smart'.

Definitely too smart for its own good in this case. What's happening is the wheel speed sensors see movement in the back but none in the front, so it thinks the front wheel speed sensors have gone bad, and sets off the ABS light.
