yall got it easy every where!!! we get our tint checked at Inspection Time. they have a "playing card" size card that says "Pass" on one side and "fail" on the other. they put it on one side of the window, if they can read the word "pass" through the glass with the tint on it, then your good, if they cant they flip the card over and read the word "fail" and at that point you start thinking.."who can i pay off to pass my car..."

Guys, just pop down in to KY to get your windows tinted. Heck, I think it's legal to just spray-paint them solid black in KY! I believe you'd be legal with no opaque glass other than a 3"X8" tank slit in the windshield...and I think they might let you tint THAT to 20%. :-)

When I moved to VA from KY, I got pulled over for my tint. It was 30%. I let the officer know that I had just moved to the state three days prior, and he said, "It doesn't matter, it's illegal to have tinted windows here."

I had titanium tint on my Jetta. That was a nice tint on that car. It would look stupid on the KJ though. Take it to a GOOD place that has a lifetime warranty and ask them to match the backs. If they don't have a lifetime warranty, walk away.

Yup. That's exactly why I payed the extra $20 per window - the lifetime warranty is absolutely needed with stick-on tint.

Nothing. I took it to court and it was thrown out. VA likes making rules that can't be accurately enforced.

what was your defense?

I just got a quote from a professional installer with lifetime warranty for 6" windshield, plus front windows matching rears for $145.
what do you guys think? too expensive? just about right? it is in NY.. so consider some rip off value on top of normal numbers. ;)

My defense was that I still had KY tags when I got the ticket. The state of VA can't expect everyone that passes through the state to stop at the border and strip their tint off. They already expect you to throw away your radar detectors when you reach the border, since radar detectors are "illegal" in the state of VA (which is an unconstitutional "law"...but there I digress..."

I have a friend who says that he got off a VA tint ticket by telling the court that he bought the car in a different state and it already had tint on it. But every VA State officer that pulls you over will tell you to get it stripped. I don't know. I do know that you can get (no I am not making this up) a doctor's perscription to run darker window tint in the state of VA.

Oh yeah! If you want tint, head to KY. 8) I'm serious about the tank-slit concept. The T-Bird Turbo Coupe I drove for a couple years in college was like being in a cave. You couldn't see out the windows at night. Serious. I had to roll 'em down to figure out where I was. And the back window was nearly black. I bought the thing at a used lot in Mt. Sterling (you can get ANYTHING used in Mt. Sterling....especially during October Court Days!!) and it was already tinted by the previous owner, who was apparently undead. I sure had a lot of privacy in that back seat. :D

I personally have been able to get away with tinting on my front windows and I live in California. In my Jetta I had 35% but it was a Jetta. The police never took a second look at it.

http://images5.fotki.com/v88/photos/1/191356/894007/Jun30163-vi.jpg

And my explorer I went a lot lighter on but the place I took it to was able to match the color and the mirrored affect so it didn't look too bad.

I never got any harassment for either one.

Yes, this is valid for many (probably all) states. If you check the DMV site they have PDF application for "tint for medical reasons" permit.

I got 15% and yes it is illegal but i really don't care as long as they match. They match the back windows perfectly from the outside but from the inside you can tell they're a little bit darker and i can post some pics if anyone wants to see.

I think I have that. It is tiny bit darker than the rears, you can only notice the difference if you tilt your head and look at a bright wall or billboard, then you can see the difference. Mine is %15 or %20 i think.

If I get a ticket, I'll pay it. Big deal. It's a non-moving violation, so it won't hit your insurance.

Dito for KY. I did the same thing. Looks great. works even better. Black KJ dark windows. Besides I don't fit the "Profile"

How much are you spending on tint? One of the easiest things to do. Check out this item number on ebay : 160141267407

PRE-CUT tint in all shades for the liberty. Shipping more than the tint. but when or if you are forced to peal it off, at least it doesn't hurt as bad.

Order this for the wifes car. easy to install since it is precut. just DON'T EVER USE AN AMONIA BASED CLEANER LIKE WINDEX ON YOUR WINDOW TO CLEAN THEM and wait 3 days for the adheasive to set up. tape your buttons down so you are rmeinde not to operate the windows till they are dry. mistake most people make is opening them TOO SOON.

I paid the dude $80 for two fronts and windshield strip. He did a good job. He said 48 hours, no playing with windows. I didn't open them for 4 days! :)

Pre-cut stuff just won't work if you don't know what you are doing, sliding them in place, getting the bubbles out, adjusting etc.. just too much hassle. Pay someone with guaranteed work, and if it bubbles go back and get them to redo it. It is dirt cheap for them.

Wish I had all that money to throw away. Watch the videos on the window film web site. get the dvd from autozone. The hardest part about the whole thing is cutting it to fit. the pre cut stuff makes it so darned easy.

http://www.gilafilms.com/Automotive/automotive-tint-application.htm

clean the window. scrape the window with a razor blade. clean again with a NON amonia cleaner, (dawn clear or non perfumed and no dies dish soap) and then wet the window down wet as you peel off the backing place film on slightly open window up to about 1/4 inch from the top.

squeegie the soapy water opt after you wet down the film. as you work your way down, raise the window closed and use the squeegie to tuck the fil under the wweather stripping along the bottom.

Let dry for 2 or 3 days and presto, contribute the funds to your lift bank account.

Don't forget to tape down the switches.

everybody does their own cb install and cuts up their dash and drills hole for antenna's. WHY NOT tint your own windows. 80.00 per window, what a scam, once you learn how to take you time and do it right you will be kicking yourself that you paid so much before.

Not like wiring where you can kill yourself and your car. One of the easiest thing you can do. Just take your time.

it's not 80 per window. two front windows and windshield strip, if I shopped around I could have gotten it done for $50. Also, try lining windshield strip and cut out the mirror holder.. You will pay ebay dude $25 for two front windows. And do all the work yourself, it is just not worth it in my opinion. But of course that's just me. And I respect your opinion and effort.

I wired up my stereo in my jeep and a few other things, and I would have to say it is much easier than lining up the darn thing, leaving as little untinted window as possible at the tips..
