My '06 CRD purchased in Jan '06 now has 45,600 on the clock. I'm a little dissappointed in my fuel mileage getting between 23 and 24mpg over the life of the vehicle (I do about 80% highway, 20% city). The vehicle has, however, been trouble free; it's had all the TSB's and LBJ recall performed.

Now that the wife is going to be getting a new Wrangler Unlimited, I'll drive my CRD for a while longer and then probably get something more fuel efficient for my daily commute.

Overall my CRD is not a bad vehicle; I would rate it as average.

Things I Love;
It's a diesel!

Things I like:
Fairly comfortable for a Jeep
Adequate interior capacity for my needs
Absolutely no worries in bad weather
Easy to perform basic maintenance

Things I don't like:
Most recalled (including TSB's) Jeep I've ever owned
Fuel mileage is dissappointing
OEM air filtration system is pathetic

Hi Bob,

This sums up my experiences very well too. I'm hoping an aftermarket torque converter with a lower stall will improve the fuel economy (and driving experience), but nothing will address the sour feeling I have as a first-time Jeep owner that they put this vehicle out there with so many design flaws and so little post-sales support to address them. I hope I can improve on what Jeep sold me, but I will never be a Jeep owner again.

- Chris

AMEN, this was also the my first Jeep vehicle and will probably be the last. After 20+ years of buying Chrysler vehicles, this is definately my last. There are way too many quality vehicles available today to even consider tolerating these kinds of design issues.

After the experiences that my folks have had over nearly a year and 10k miles with their CRD, a used one may be my next ride (in a few years). Of course, I'd build an aftermarket Suncoast torque converter into the purchase budget.

And the CRD is their 6th Jeep:

#1: 1948 Willys Jeep Pickup, Chevrolet I-6, 4x4
#2: 1970 Jeep Commando, V6, 4x4
#3: 1974 Jeep J-10, 360 V8, 4x4
#4: 1978 Jeep Wagoneer, 360 V8, Quadra-Trac
#5: 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 4.0L 6, Selec-Trac
#6: 2006 CRD Limited, 2.8 VM TD, Selec-Trac.

The folks: 2006 Liberty CRD Limited, Lt. Khaki (picked up 7/21/06 w/ 300 miles). Rotella 5W-40.

And: 1995 Grand Cherokee 4.0 Laredo, Silver, Selec-Trac, custom free-flow exhaust by local shop.

Me: 1998 Subaru Outback AWD, 2.5 DOHC, 5-speed manual. Nearly 170k miles & runs awesome.

For instance, a new CRD owner could gain 4-7 mpg just by reading a few posts (especially on driving style, but also on mods and maintanance).

Is there a "condensed" post somewhere here that lists ALL these MODs to improve the CRDs MPGs ?? :?:

Hi! The 2005 has a 7-70 warranty. Twice that of the 2006.

Good luck! LK

I love mine. Wish I had a second one all wrapped in plastic someplace to replace it when it's time has come. I have had all the TSB's done except the F-37. I figure if my TC commits suicide it will get a Suncoast replacement.

I get good mileage and I figure that if I were getting the lower mileage that some are complaining about I would still be happy. Why? Show me another comparable product that even gets the lower mileage they are complainiing about. I am getting 24>26 in mixed driving after the ORM which is the only mod I have done. I haven't had a high speed road trip yet but I am sure I will be over 34 since I was able to get 32 on such trips before the mod.

I am not a Jeep guy but the Liberty may have made me one if they keep building diesels.

Honestly if you getting at least the new revised numbers from the EPA...you really can't complain. This is a 4300# SUV. Th top numbers are for the CRD.

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm

If you really try (100% of the time), you can get better mileage than this also...but you have to control speed, acceleration rates, idiling time, ect. I even put the auto in Neutral or Park when sitting at a light or turn it off if I know I am going to be there for 30 seconds or more.

Some others (all 2006 models):

Toyota RAV AWD 3.5L V6 Auto(5).....................................19/26
Honda CR-V AWD 2.4L I4 Auto(5).....................................20/25
Subaru Forrester AWD 2.5L Flat 4 Auto(4)........................20/25
Jeep CRD 4x4 2.8L I4 Diesel Auto(5)...........................19/23
Suzuki Grand Vitara AWD 2.7L V6 Auto(5)........................17/21
Ford Escape 4WD 3.0L V6 Auto(4)....................................17/21
Jeep Liberty 4x4 3.7L V6 Auto(4)......................................15/20

Ford Escape Hybrid 4WD..................................................28/26

None of the "other" SUVs above are true 4x4s and I don't believe any of them can tow near 5,000 pounds. I routinely get 20+ city/27+ highway.

2007 Diesel SUV choices:

Mercedes ML320 CDI 4MATIC.................................19/24
Mercedes GL320 CDI 4MATIC.................................18/23
Jeep GC CDI Auto.................................................17/22
VW Touareg 10CYL Diesel......................................15/20

Not very many choices and all are $40,000+

I got mine with 7 miles on it, it has a little over 35,000 miles on it.
I run it on B80 (80 percent biodiesel and 20 percent diesel). no complaints what so ever.

It is a shame that the 2007 EPA requirements put a stop to the CRD in the U.S.

And the Passat TDI, Jetta TDI, Golf TDI and probably several other diesel powered vehicles, that might have been offered for sale if the US had an intelligent EPA policy for diesel emissions.

The funny thing is that the 2006 CRD is more environmentally friendly than the 2006 3.7L ...

now that I have a second job, and I can pay down the Credit Cards and Finish our house sooner, I may be in the Market for another in a year or so, If I was rich I would but another in a heart beat. I test drove one of the First 05's off the line when the dealer got it but still bought one of the last 06's made. Its everything I expected, and my wife loves it, maybe more then me. but then again we've only just turned 9700 miles...
