Your right,ATF+4 is fully snythetic.I should have been more specific in mentioning a higher quality type like Amsoil.I want the best in there if it's going to be my last change.

I personally would still change my fluid every 15,000 miles even using Amsoil,I'm just stubborn about preventive maintance and never trust anything that is labeled "extended" anything, that's just me though.

'I' will drop the pan on my tranny and change the oil in it every 30k. I will also install the shift kit for the 42rle at 30k when I do my first oil change. Ill be using Amsoil to fill the pan back up.

Weve dropped the pan in our 94 grand cherokee which has the 42re tranny. Everyone always said that tranny doesnt last and how its not good for towing. That jeep has 160k on it and its towed a 2500lb boat in the hills of ky its entire life. We bought it new in 1994. Never had a problem outta it.

Changing the filter and fluid is your option, thats why they sell the kits.Someone just asked me directly what "I" would be doing.I simply gave him "my" choice. After all....I did say "thats what blows my dress up".

My personal experience is my 97 Dakota with over 100k on it.I too have worn out 3 hitch pins towing with it,never had the pan off,and I guess you can just call us both lucky now.

haha, Im OCD about doing maintenance on my Jeep but 30k seems good. The manual calls for 60k, so Im doing half of that. 8)

I even took the tie-rod ends off the other day and pumped them full of grease. I attempted to do that on the upper balljoints but I was unsuccessful. I do NOT recommend trying to get the boots off the upper balljoints while they are on the Jeep! New thread to come soon.

I regret changing mine.

makes a horrible racket now, etc.

probably would have been better off just leaving it and saving up for a tranny rebuild for the 150K mark

That would really piss me off.
What mileage did you change it at? Is there any reason it would have gone bad so quick....lot of offroading, overheating problem?
It wasn't Jiffy Lube, was it?

I am highly skeptical on any trannies service issues as years back in the early 90's. our fleet of dozens of Minivans and Taurus albeit older models consistantly had tranny failures as they were not designed to handle the heat. The specialty tranny shops were full of these 2 model designs but I trust the newer model years have enhanced trannies. That being said, I do not trust not servicing these as KJ tranny failures are not unheard of ie. I know of my colleagues 02 failure and the many posts here. I would do the tranny service to avoid the several $X,000 tranny rebuild/replacement.

I also am concerned w/ the tech skill levels as I was even concerned when I changed my diff fluids and xfer case at the stealership. The info here is great for DIY but I didn't trust myself to do it properly so bit the bullet and just had it done. I just keep an eye out to see if there are any leaks afterwards..

When I did my tranny service at the Stealership, I asked for a full service of the tranny fluids but they said it only needed partial service.... he explained it would be too hard to do a complete fluid replacement.... WTF?? That was not cheap either and I felt they just were too lazy.

The primary reason I do these services at the stealership is so in the case of failure, I may have some recourse w/ DC to show I followed their service guidelines in the hopes that they would goodwill warranty the failure....

no not jiffy lube, its been off-road once, never had the over heat light on, fluid doesn't smell burnt, only tows around 2500 lb every couple of months a couple hundred miles.

Hmmm... I wonder why that is in the manual? 60,000 miles instead of never?

It’s now in the manual because the uneducated individual who came up with the idea that the MOPAR FLUID could run forever without changing the fluid is now realizing that it wasn’t such a great fluid after all. The Jeep Service department who sees a lot of these transmissions told me that they wouldn‘t go more than 30,000 without changing it under severe driving conditions and no more than 50,000 under normal driving conditions. They do a lot of transmission changes on the Liberty and most of the fluid is pretty burnt up when they change them at 60,000 + miles. Food for thought!

Good to know. Thanks for the info.
I asked the service advisor at my dealership and he said to change it at 25,000 miles.
I figured he was exagerrating, but maybe........perhaps...........possibly..........he was giving me good, honest advice.

I will change mine every 25,000 miles even though I’m using Amsoil. I’m a lot like tjkj2002 (a little overboard when it comes to maintenance). But the good thing is that my vehicles run solid for many miles, many years, and have very little down time. It saves money in the long run, saves headaches, and gives me a piece of mind when traveling cross country or when operating my vehicle in extreme temperatures and driving conditions. My wife and I have driven used vehicles for several years until we could finally afford NEW. I’ve taken engines and transmissions nearly 250,000 miles by running Amsoil Synthetics and being overkill on maintenance. We never once had an over heating problem, engine problem, transmission problem, or any other problem due to a lack of maintenance. I have taken care of my NEW Liberty and RAM from the get go and plan to keep them forever. The Liberty and Ram were our first NEW vehicles so we are extra careful to take the time to maintenance as the newness wears off. It’s only worth it if you plan to keep your vehicles for a long time. If not, then I see little value going the extra mile with maintenance if you don’t plan to see over 100,000 miles and 5 years of driving before trading it off.
