Alright, my dad was at his mechanics today to drop off the seats for his truck to the mechanics wife who does car interior fixing. My dad mentioned to his mechanic about a jeep liberty because i want to buy one and his mechanic said dont buy one because they are crap. He never went into detail as to why but anyways, he went to another mechanic who owns a jeep (not a liberty, he never said what) and said its crap also. So now my parents are starting to try and get me away from buying a jeep which i dont want to do. They got a big say in this purchase since they are giving me some money to buy a new car as part of my grad gift. I need some help in to sway them away from beleiving the mechanic because i dont beleive they are right and i dont want those boneheads to be the reason i dont get a liberty. So any way you guys could help me out would be great thanks!

First why are you listening(or your parents) to some else about a vehicle.Buy what you want,if you don't get what you want you will not be happy.Except for the LBJ's there is nothing wrong with a KJ,those guys just don't like them because they have a non-KJ Jeep. You will find alot of those around.

Tell your parents to come on here and talk to us.

They should not listen to idiots that do not own one. Have them talk to those that DO own them.

Nuff said.

I agree with the rest! Tell them to check out Consumer Reports if that will convince them. It's rated a CR Best Buy! My gas mileage has been pretty good overall and I've had NO problems with mine (knock on wood!) - not even my ball joints were bad when I took it in for the recall. As far as I'm concerned, it's one of the best vehicles I've owned!

I am not a Jeep guy or a MOPAR guy. I bought my Liberty for the diesel engine and I am happy I did. It takes me everywhere. I am old and have had a lot of cars of my own and driven a lot of company cars but the Liberty is the best car/truck I have owned so far. A friend suggested the Liberty and he is definately a MOPAR guy. He has two Libery's and loves them both. The only major problem he has had with his intro year Liberty is a broken heater core and he tows his off road CJ with it in AZ.

Dear Mom and Dad,

I'm writing you this letter to tell you that I am an ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certified auto technition. The Liberty has been out now for about 7 years, and I find it to be a VERY dependable and safe vehicle. Our shop has had several Libertys visit us,but only for maintnance.I used to be sceptical about DC and Jeep products until I bought my 97 Dodge Dakota, and now my 03 Jeep Liberty.Just consider all of these post you are reading,we ALL can't be wrong.

Oh yeah....and don't get mad at me for trying to persuade you cause "It's a Jeep Thing" and now I understand. :)

I've had my '02 for just under 6 years now, and it has actually been every bit as reliable as my '90 Acura Integra! I never thought I'd say that about a DC/Jeep vehicle!

And I never did Golden Spike in my Integra! 8)

Ok I am a mechanic and know 2 others that agree with me that they are good vehicles. So thats 3 to 2 in favor. Problem solved.

I also have to say that the Liberty is one of the more reliable vehicles I have owned or been around. Now I'm not an ASE certified mechanic but I spent 9.5 years as a military mechanic working on everything from HMMWVs (Humvees) to 70 ton tanks and everything in between. I've also wheeled the heck out of my Liberty in the Rockies over the past 3 years and the only problems I've had are routine maintenance items and a couple of items I broke due to improper installation of aftermarket parts. The gas mileage is reasonable but not excellent and is excellent in accidents (there are a couple of pictures on here of KJs being hit by an 18-wheeler and the occupants walked away). Also, I trust my KJ enough to put my newborn son in it and wheel with my 13 year old niece.

I trust it enough to go wheeling with all my kids. Ages 2 to 12. Put 12,xxx+ miles on it in the last year, since I got it and the lbj's are the only thing I've had a problem with that I didn't cause. Even when I have had to work on it, everything is relatively easy to get to and work on.

Hey I bought my Liberty CRD for the MPG's and becouse it's a JEEP. The only Problems I have had with mine have the EGR and FCV. Thanks to the folks here on Lost I have fixed them and get great mileage. If it were my son or daughter I would have them buy a used CRD. Just my .02 worth.

Well if you do get one don't let him drive it or he will be addicted. I know how he feels going against the decision of someone he knows and most importantly trust......but I think he will be quite surpprised to find out that his friends were probably just mistaken. Again....."It's a Jeep Thing" and hopefully someday even he'll understand.

One of the reasons the gassers do not get great mileage is the curb weight of the vehicle. Over 4000 lbs., so in an accident you are going to be safer(not in a crv or other wanna be 4wd). Try pushing the safety issue with your parents.
I love mine, and the fit and finish on the kj are excellent. Good luck!
