Hey All,

I just dropped of my 06 CRD at the Dealer for the G03 Blower recall that I posted yesterday, as well as State Inspection.

I also mentioned to my Service Advisor a problem of tapping from the engine when hot. To me it sounds like a valve tap but I must say my hearing is not as good as it used to be.

My question is has anyone here had valve train problems that started with a tap or have any of you had any problems like this and how did you handle it?

Thanks in advance to all!

Eric

UGH!

I have 9100 miles on mine.

Did you have any early symptoms or did this happen out of the blue?

E

I as well have a "tap"... my dealer has turned all info it has found on mine over to Star (i have no clue what "star" is)

as my motor gets warmer it gets louder. it kinda sounds like a exaust leak on the pax side. but its not. So then we thught it was a valve... no dice there either... the dealer is stumped... so im going to drop mine off again next week when im out of town.

Im using the oil that the dealer put in..... mobie 1 syn. what the book says to use....

The correct Mobil 1 and Mopar filter.

It went all at once...sounded like a machine gun going off. They really never told me exactly what happened but I know the Valve (cyclinder1) and Glow Plug (cylinder1) went thru the engine.

Just got back from the Dealer.

New blower motor installed, State inspection completed and..................................."Technician unable to duplicate customer concern, no valve tap heard"

Go figure.

I was able to talk to the Tech and I am taking it back to him on Friday afternoon. I have some business in Maryland and engine will be hot enough to have him hear it on the way back.

I will let you know how I make out.

Eric

Mine has been "tap dancing" it's whole life as well now at 43,500 miles. If she implodes, like Darby's at least I have the 7/100 warranty on engine and powertrain.

The "tap" is normal CRD fuel system noise.

You have good ears, I can't hear it from here.
I will say this. I've owned and driven a bunch of diesels, but they do still scare me from time to time with noises.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think you're pretty much screwed when it comes to diagnosing a diesel by ear.

I also have this tapping. If it is a common CRD fuel system issue (and it may well be) why does it sound like more or less one tap per engine revolution?

Back in 79, that's 1979  when my first diesel "tapped" it turned out to be a injector that was gumming up  Eventually it turned into a knock that I would have sworn was a rod knock but it was the injector  My second diesel in 82 did the same trick and it smoked a lot also :? Try some injector cleaner. There's a super product but I don't recall the name of it. (not power service) Standyne maybe :D

There is a product by StarBrite called StarTron that I am using and the MB has really quitened down since I started using the stuff. Couple people over on the MB diesel forum have been using it an speak real highly of the product, so I thought I would also try the stuff. I found it in the boating section at Wal-Mart and it is not too expensive.

not this one.... it didnt do it for the first 20k miles i had her.. AND it gets louder as the motor heats up. IF it was a part of anything else it would be loaud when the motor cold and go away as it heats up.

my dealer is really working hard into finding what the prob is.

I don't belive my "tap" is normal either. My CRD has 9,800 miles and the tap started around 9,500 miles. It gets louder as the engine heats up. I also don't believe the tech at the dealership got the engine hot enough to hear it that is why I am taking it back tomorrow after a trip to Maryland. No doubt he will hear it tap then.
