Does it hurt anything if the dealer put the wrong viscosity oil in for my 1st oil change?
I got it changed at 780 miles and the invoice says they put in 5W30. Was supposed to be 5W20. (didn't notice until today)

Got my 2nd oil change a couple days ago at 2,947 miles and this time they used 5W20 according to the invoice.
I had a coupon for $17.95, and when I go to pay they charged me $28.00.
They said it costs more because they use semi-synthetic oil.

I also asked them when I should change the transmission fluid, and they said every 25,000 miles.
Asked them if I could order a transmission dipstick and they just looked lost and confused and said I could not order one.

(I think I found my answer on the web. Sounds like it doesn't really matter. The 5W20 was introduced because of CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) requirements and is supposed to get fractions better gas mileage, but from what I read 5W30 should be fine.........except for a couple oddball remarks that it was absolutely horrible and to get it changed immediately to prevent engine damage)

5-30 is probably better for the motor and it will probably last longer. The number at the end is what the viscosity is when the engine is at operating temperature. The higher it is, the more protection the oil has, but the more difficult it is for the engine to displace it, hence the better mpg on the 20w versus the 30w. But the 30w provides more protection.

The real thing that 30w does to you is decreases your gas mileage. The new 5W-20 oil should be used in all instances [where it's recommended] because most modern engines have much tighter tolerances and clearances which require a thin oil to properly provide enough lubrication between all of the moving components.

I doubt that there was any damage done. Just make sure you check your receipt next time you go in.

IMO those coupons are only a trick to get you to go back to the dealer.

Read your owners manual

I THINK that it says 5-20 in colder weather not over 80* and 5-30 on warmer weather could be wrong though

Mine is an 05 3.7L and the owners manual recommends 5w30. I don't have an 07 owners manual but I will bet that it says to use 5w20 but you can also use 5w30. I'm sure Jason Thompson is correct. You didn't hurt it.

Use what your manual says, 5w20, but I don't see how 5w30 would hurt it. I wouldn't worry about it.

Check around more on the tranny dipstick question. I'll bet they just plugged it. If this is so, then a dipstick tube and dipstick from an earlier model 42 tranny will have to fit.

Also changing tranny fluid every 25,000 miles like they told you sounds like overkill, unless you are constantly towing or something. Check your manual though and see what it says. I'll bet plugging the tranny and eliminating the dipstick so you can't check it and telling you to change it every 25,000 miles is related to getting you to bring it in more often for service.

My coupon was 18.95 and was charged 21.92 This was for oil & filter, tire rotation and 23 point inspection, whatever that is.

after you go back and have them put the correct oil in it, never go to that rip off stealership again. they gave you an excellent indicator how they will price gouge you from now on with that extra money you had to pay for the wrong oil.

its not a matter of a tiny difference in fuel mileage, its a matter of them not being able to service your vehicle according to the way the factory has specified. if they cant do that with something simple like oil, you certainly cant trust anything else to them.

HEED THE WARNING, or you will regret it, big time

5w-20 is specs for the 2007 libertys. Thats what they call for, so its the right thing. The dealer is doing what they have been told to do by DC..

The hemis in the grands also call for 5w-20 but thats has to do with MDS..

Either way, it probably to get more MPG outta the 3.7.. I run 10w-30 and always have. Ive been thinking about running 5w-30 in the winter months and 10w-30 in the summer.. idk..

He said they put in 5w-30.. Doesnt matter either way, its not going to hurt a thing..

I read it wrong and thought he said they used 5w-20 when he wanted 5w-30..

Ive heard its best to now use syn on the first oil change(could be total BS). I change my oil at 1500 and 3k with dino oil and switched to Mobil one SYN at 6k.. :)

All I know is that I need to learn to change my own oil. I hate going to the dealership especially now since they send me bogus coupons and can't even put the correct oil in it. They didn't even put air in the tires like the coupon said they'd do with their incredible 16-point inspection.
Do I need lifts to change my oil or can I do it without having it jacked up?

my mistake, i typed 10 instead of 5. no worries.

the way ive always broken in my cars is change it at 500, again at 1000, again 1500 later then every 3000 after that with regular oil or every 7500-10000 (with a halfway thru filter change) with synthetic from that point on if thats what yur gunna do

There is just enough room to crawl underneath it to change it. No jacks required. I am a big guy and I fit under there.

Cool. I'm pretty skinny, so it should be no problem to fit under there. It also looks like I should be able to get the filter off pretty easy from the top. I'm going to wait until a day off and do it in the morning so I'll have all the time I need with no pressure. Everytime I try something new like this I usually have a minor disaster.
