What could this be right now im running rotella syn 5 40 and motorcraft fl 2005 wally world filter. My 36k warranty expires in 200 miles however i do own a 05 i wonder if the 7 year warranty works? Do warranties only cover items that blow up? Ive noticed the engine burning a quart every 4 to 6k miles.

just take it in before the warrenty goes!!! they cant charge you for anything as long as its under 36K. the 70K is only powertrain.

If you take it in now, you will have documentation. I would also take an oil sample NOW and send it in to get an Oil Analysis. The analysis will tell you which metals are present in "high" amounts and if your oil was still performing well. Once you see which metals are present you will know wear the problem is. More info about this at :

http://www.BobistheOilGuy.com

Blackstone Labs will send you a "kit" for free and the analysis is about $25.00 +/- a bit. If you want to collect the oil now, let the engine warm up a bit...change your oil...catch 12 ounces after a quart or so passes...save it to ship back with the kit. Save the let over sample for your own records. Save your Oil Filter also...you can have it analysed if needed. The more info the better

Good info about what an oil analysis can give you:

I took a sample from my CRD last night and hand delivered it to a local lab this morning. They charge $21.50:

http://www.oillab.com/index.htm

They also do a filter analysis. I asked them to explain that for me. They said that most filters filter down to about 5 microns so most of what you get in the oil analysis is the small stuff. To get the big stuff they spin the top off the oil filter you send them and wash out and analyze the big stuff to see what it is. I would think that if you are already finding big stuff this might be a useful service for $75.

When I get my report back I will post it in that sticky thread.

Edit Note: I am not doing the filter just the oil to establish a baseline to determine best change interval and a comparison between Mobile 1 and Rotella.

Sounds like $100 worth of ammo to use at the dealership. The MORE YOU KNOW, the LESS RESISTANCE THEY will demonstrate.

Wouldnt the powertrain warranty cover the engine? Mines a 05 plus usually they have diesel warranties. I told the dealer ship that the hose going to turbo had large amounts of black soot on it. Wonder if the turbo went bad and pieces of it went in the engine? So far the dealers have been worthless all of them including chrysler.
