Yesterday on the highway I was behind a broken down semi. I had to punch it to get around him. When I merged back over and off the highway I noticed my RPMs climbed slowly and I couldn't go much faster than 25. I thought I was in the wrong gear and parked it and put it back in D and the same thing happened. I got home (only a mile or so away) and shut it down for 3 hours and tried it again and it was fine. Was that limp mode or is my tranny messing up?

More problems today. I drove to the bank to make some deposits. Coming home the RPMS would go up and I'd hear a WOOSH and the RPM's would drop 500 then start to go back up. Any ideas before I take it to the stealership? I'd like to tell them where to start.

Could be a blown/split intercooler hose or it may have slipped off from where it should be connected. This would make the boost from your turbo ineffective and the computer may be trying to compensate but can't.

+1

The WOOSH sound is what makes me think it could be. When it happened to us, it would surge up and down as we'd try to accelerate. It's a fairly common problem to our CRDs.

Anybody got a picture of this area so I can inspect the hose? Is it something I can reattach myself or do I need a new hose?

Have you ever had a check engine light when it does the limp thing? When mine did it a couple of times I would pull over to the side of the road shut the engine off and start it up again and it would run just fine, but I would get a check engine light and the dealer said it was for a large air leak in the fuel system which happened when I ran the fuel level real low one day and on my way to the fuel station I might have gone around a corner and injested some air in the system. They pumped the air out up at the fuel filter housing with the primer pump and that solved the problem. Hope this gives you some insight to your problem.

I don't have a picture but. Stand in front of the CRD with the hood up. Then on the left of the radiator look for a big black rubber hose partially covered with plastic screen like stuff running front to rear. The one that is most obvious is what your looking at. It goes into what looks like the radiator but is actually the intercooler. It's not hapened to me but I understand they come off where they hook into the intercooler :D

All those hoses are firmly connected. Any other ideas? It goes just fine under normal load, but it has to be turbo related because as soon as I push it, it wooshes and then gets sluggish before it wooshes again. It doesn't make the whistley sound like when you let off the gas though. It is defintely a woosh.

From what others have described it still sounds lik a hose so check the other ends too on both sodes of the intercooler. If you were in limp it would throw a code and shift you into 2nd gear and keep it there. If you were hard on the throttle and still going nowhere on limp your rpms would high. I don't think others who have had loose hoses have had a cel and that seems to be what you are experiencing.

Well I'm going to have to take it in. All the hoses that I can follow in and out of the turbo are connected. The only other thing I can think of is one might be split. I am open for any ideas but I don't see any physical problems.

I would take it in, also check the hose on the other side of the innercooler-- the one that runs back to the engine. Are your hoses soft and full of oil? The oil weakens them and DCX has redisgned them to combat this. If you have lots of oil, or the hose is soft-- I would bet one is split somewhere.

If they are tight at the fittings, then I would agree that there is a leak in the hose itself.

Sometimes, not often, the intercooler will leak as well. Intercoolers should be checked periodically with a pressure test. They need to be taken to 35psi and checked. If they lose over 5 lb psi in 15 seconds, they are considered to be leaking. It can cost you in lost power and fuel mileage and you may not notice it like you would if there was a major leak.

From your description, I doubt this is the problem and the ideas others presented are a good start. If you or dealer don't find it in the hoses, check the intercooler itself.

Hose was indeed split. I didn't get the car back until Wednesday afternoon since they had to order the hose. DC even did it under warranty even though I had 38,000 on it. (I had an extended warranty, but it woulda been a $100 deductible if thye used it).
