Of the locked up rear calipers.

Driving home from walmart.. Getting ready to leave for a date tonight I noticed that it took alittle more gas to get it going.. Pulled over and sure enough the right rear rotor was hot. My mothers work was close by so I went to it to let it cool off(didnt want the bearings to get hot). Got some bottles of water and poured on it. I could then turn the wheel(had it jacked up), so I started home. I stopped twice to check it and used the E-Brake around town but as soon as I hit the brakes, it would lock back up. Had to stop 3/4 of the way home and pour some more water on it.. Guess Ill be putting a new caliper on it tomorrow.

I even took the pins out around 4 weeks ago when I painted my rear axle and cleaned/lubed them.. I guess its the piston that seizes up and not the pins.

Where would be the best place to get a new one? I was thinking Napa.. I tend to like them more than other places..

Good thing is Im driving moms Hemi tonight on the date. Girl drives an 03 Inferno red Grand so we should match up great since that thats what we have(only its a 06).

Sounds like the calipher pistons are to small for the calipher housings and getting wedged sideways a little causing them to stick,or getting junk in the brake lines causing the sticking caliphers(bad end seals in the caliphers?).

Mine was right rear as well, Definitely the piston sticking. I got my replacement from the dealer, I think I paid $68, which I didnt think was too bad. Couldn't find one at any of the usual places.

Be sure to lube the pins, the rails and the back of the pads where they meet the piston.

Funny how some items from the dealer are very reasonable and other items seem way over priced. I bought a new sport front bumper cover for a little over 100, but the 16 clips to re-attach the side molding cost me 80 bucks.

Hmm, Ill call around tomorrow and see who has what.

When I took the pins out to lube them they looked fine.. But Ill be sure to lube the new ones.

I had the rear brake system taken apart when I took the axle out so the fluid was new since I had to bleed them. I do not believe me taking the rear axle off has anything to do with it though. That was the first thing I heard when I walked in the door. "You take that thing apart to much, you broke it."

How many people have had trouble with the rear brakes? Soon after I replaced the balljoints with moogs(stock ones had play in them), they had a recall on those. Guess Ill be looking out for a recall on the rear calipers now.

I had the Rt Rear on mine stick about 2 months ago and my brakes have never been touched. Mine just dragged, didn't lock and has been great ever since. It seems to me that next to the ball joints this is the one consistent problem with Libertys and it happens enough that it should be reported to NTSB to try an force a recall. It is a safety issue.

My right rear caliper locked about a week ago had it repaired under warranty but i had to pay for new pads and a new rotor. The part of the equation i don't understand is why the caliper was covered but not the damage it did..

I don't think that would have happened at my dealer but then they have been in the new car sales business as a family here since cars. If it had happened I would have first been gentle, then forceful then I would have howled like a stuck pig and written my Congress "person".

I don't know how long ago you did this but I would be tempted to go back to the dealership, not the service manager, and ask for an explanation. If they start talking about the brake parts being expendables that wear out like oil filters then I would tell them that this was not normal wear but contributary wear from the failed part. If they still won't budge I would send the paperwork to DC (or is it just C now?) and ask them for an explanation. If you have an unethical service manager or a dealer who is double dipping by billing you and DC I am sure DC would be interested. If it is DC's policy then I would discuss it with you states Attorney Generals office or if you have loads of time take them to small claims court. I bet the judge would see it your way.

I am sure that there were brake parts and tires that were destroyed and replaced under warranty when ball joints failed. That would fall into the same category.

Called the nearest dealership to see if they had one.. They said they did. Drove 15min to the place and they didnt have one. They took down my name and said they would order one, but I came home and ordered one at Napa. I would rather give me money to napa anyway..

That dealership has some of the crappest service Ive ever seen.. Ill probably never go back there again.

And now I have a weird feeling towards my Jeep. It only has 26k on it and Ive replaced the balljoints, had a sensor for the airbag go bad in one of the seats, had a recall on the rear flipper glass, and now a bad caliper.

Wonder how long it will take for the other caliper to go bad?

Haha, I thought about just going ahead and buying one for it but at $62 I figured I would just wait.

Fairly sure my girl cant work on her own jeep, but she washes it and keeps it clean! Thats good enough for me. :D 8)

Took the caliper off today. I could tell it was on tight since I had to use a screw driver to pry it off the rotor. I was amazed at how easy it was to push the piston back in with the c-clamp though. I thought for sure it would be stuck good but it went right back in. It was alittle tight at first but other than that it seemed ok.

Hopefully I will get off work early enough tomorrow to pick up the new one at napa.. That close at 5:30.. Got to pick up some more brake fluid too since I used the rest of what I had to fill it back up. I dont want air to get in all the lines so hopefully it wont leak anymore. I tried my best to seal it off so that it wont drain anymore fluid out. I would hate to bleed all four calipers. :?

Got the caliper painted and put on today. Ill drive it to work in the morning to see how they do.. No one is usually on the road at 6 in the morning so if they dont work, everyone should be safe.. except for me.

Jeepjeepster,
So on the old one did the piston feel real tight in the bore or ??? Just wondering what is causing this to happen. I can see if they were older but like yours it has no miles at all on it yet! Mine has over 76000 and no problems (knocking on wood  ) Hey maybe you washed it to much    Well hope this takes care of your braking problems!

Tom

The piston went right back in with the use of a C-Clamp. I was wanting to take the caliper apart and see if I could find anything, but I had to give it up as a core charge.

The dealer wanted $68 without the old caliper but Napa wanted $94 without. I got it for $62 at napa by giving it up. I was hoping the dealer had the part but I didnt feel like messing with the dealer anymore..
