I get free oil changes in my CRD, so the car gets what the dealer puts in: Mobil 0w-40. I know that there are some here who believe my engine will have an epileptic fit because I use it, but I did have an oil analysis done and the findings were all well within expected limits including soot levels, viscosity and TBN (which I still don't know what it is). In any event, the only problem found was slightly high silicone levels from poor air filtration which I solved by changing the air filter sooner than I had been doing. In fact, the lab said I could go 10-12,000 miles between changes without issue.

However, I am on the 6k schedule as its a small inconvienience to go to dealer more often.

A little dramatic don't you think? I don't remember anyone saying that normal oil changes with a good quality synthetic oil and OEM filter even hinted that it would cause that...

He's using some sarcasm, but I get his point. People tend to split hairs. If an OEM oil filter using Mobile1 gets you 300,000 miles, then brand X super oil and a high dollar oil filter will get you 310,000 miles.

There is no sarcasm "font" so I have to rely on the intelligence (or lack thereof) of the reader to "get it". So, is this sarcasm: you figure it out

So where can we get an Amsoil filter?

And where is a good place to have an oil analissis done/sent to?

I wanted to run Rotella Shell Synthetic, has all the specs Jeep is asking for and then some, approved by Cummins.

I'm sorry, I just don't get the hype about Amsoil products. If the oil is so wonderful, why do they not participate in the API testing which shows minimum standards. I realize they have a "botique" status, but without testing who really knows for sure. Yes I have heard the stories, (" I got a million miles on my Kenworth, etc) but without independant tests it is just that-anecdotal stories.

To me, oil arguments are like the two kids yelling about who is better: Batman, or Superman.

Amen! I still after many hours searching the net and elsewhere have been unable to find any non biased independent testing between synthetic oils. I have come to the conclusion that by sticking to the recommended schedule and using a high quality filter (fram toughguard, pureone, mobil 1, etc) is cheaper than doing UOA's and trying to squeeze the last mile out of the oil, and better for the engine (even UOA's don't factor particulate buildup <10 microns, or antioxidant depletion in the oil).............Just change it.

A good oil analysis gives you information that you will not get with a simple oil change. I don't think you have to go to extremes and try to use every ounce of TBN, Vicosity, Ect of an oil to warrant an oil analysis from time to time. The ability to see fuel dillution, coolant contamination, soot build up before it causes a major problem is a good thing. Just changing the oil and filter does not stop the problem. Will an oil analysis SAVE you everytime...NO...but it might catch something very early that will save you bigger bucks down the road. Your choice of oil/filter is up to you, but it would be nice to see how well it does after you have driven on it for a while.

As for proof of AMSOIL or other synthetics superiority or inferiority, you can look at UOA's of most all of them on www.bobistheoilguy.com . I for one have tested oils drawn from Chicago Cabs, racing karts, SCCA Rotary Engines among others and there are differences. The bottom line is to just find one you are comfortable with and go with it. It is knid of like VODKA...how can you tell which one is best? You have to just drink it!

Can anyone recommend an oil filter, need to do an oil change and would like to know the best oil filter to ues for the CRD.
Thanks

I recommend Mopar part # 05003558AA (made in Italy). If it's good enough for the people who warranty the engine, it's good enough for me.

Buy 'em by the case on ebay.

Decals are in the mail.

You can find UOAs in the Oil Analysis Section...but you will have to look thru them to find what you want.
