I've noticed after riding around with Durangotang, that the )5 A/C controls are slightly different than what's on my 04. In the 05, the controls allow you to choose any of the fan setting, and seperately turn the air conditioner on or off. I'm particularlly interested in being able to use the recirculate feature, without having the AC on.

Not a big deal, but if I could pick up the controls for $25 or so at a junkyard, it would be worth doing.

I believe that you should have no problems. If I remember correctly, '03-'06's are interchangeable...a direct swap. While you have it out, you might consider modding the control so that you can use the defrost mode without the A/C (just make sure you use it once and a while in the winter to keep everything lubricated). I know there is a post somewhere describing how to do it. If you can't find it, I took pics when I did mine and I'd be happy to share.

Since we are hear to share info I figured I'd throw this out here too. The reason you hear that the newer controls with the separate a/c button won't work with '01's and '02's is b/c the temp control variable resisters are different. I installed a new control in my '03, however I soon figured out that it was really an '02 with some '03 parts (I have rear disc brakes but a RFE45 tranny, not pre-lowered). The issue arrives when you put the control on cold....it was 40 degrees out side yet the air coming out the vents was 80. (I could get it down to 60 with the a/c on) To correct this, I jumped a resistor that is soldered onto the control board. So yes, we all can enjoy the new controls!

A direct swap would be great. Why would you want to disable the AC when defrosting? The AC really dries out the air preventing the windows from fogging up. I can see how it wouldn't be necessary in a dry climate, but it really helps when the air is saturated with moisture. So I'll probably leave that alone. It's not a big issue, and plus I never run the defroster that long anyway.

You said it perfectly, Dry Climates.

Here in Colorado you need HEAT on the window, not dry air(our air is plenty dry)

I dont need to fight the cold air coming from the AC and heat it back up to melt the layer of ice covering my window.

You got to admit, its pretty stupid to have he AC running when its -10F out and your windshield is covered with ice.

Not to mention it will cut gas mileage unnessesarily.

Its my peeve that the AC on off button the 05 doesnt affect the system when the defrost is selected.

Is the mod above for disabling AC something that would allow the AC button to turn the AC on and off while set to defrost?

One of the reasons the newer vehicles have the A/C turn on with the defrost setting is for the fact to keep the compressor seals from drying out and losing refridgerent in the winter months,if you don't use the A/C very much those seals tend to start leaking so this is a good way to keep the seals from doing that.I know I have only used my A/C like 4-5 times in the last 5 years for the purpose of needing A/C.Also for some reason having the A/C on helps defrost the windshield faster.

I got a new version HVAC control of of Ebay and sawpped it out for my 03 version. Took maybe 10 min or so...just had to pull the tranny out of park to get room to pull the old one out and put the new one in.

Yes....the only time the a/c would be on is when you hit the button and the amber light comes on. It will work in any mode.

tjkj2002 is also right about running the a/c in the winter. I do not live in a dry climate, but often find that I drive in winter with the defrost/floor mode so being able to turn the a/c off after the windows are defrosted is a big plus. If the windows start fogging up, just turn the a/c back on for a bit.....I like to be in control of my vehicle.
