Stick or auto? If auto tranny you need to use ATF+4,Valvoline makes it now and is availeable at most parts stores. If you have the 45RFE(2 filters, holds like 14qts total, dry)drain and refill is about 4-6ts,it will vary tranny to tranny. You can also use Amsoil ATF,just do not use ATF+3 or DEXIII in the KJ tranny, you need full synthetic. If you have the 42RLE(1 tranny filter, about 12-13qts total, dry) drain and refill is about 4-5qts and will also vary tranny to tranny.I costs more but have a good name tranny shop do a tranny flush and filter change as to change out all the ATF instead of about a 1/3,most places do flushs for $100-$140,and $140-$200 for the flush and filter change(worth every penny in my opinion).

What year is your KJ? They switched from the 45RFE mid year '03 to the 42RLE.The 45RFE has 2 tranny filters and the 42RLE has one.

A word of caution before doing a tranny fluid change:

GET THE FILTER FROM THE DEALER!!

I had a nightmare of a time trying to get the proper filter for my girlfriend's 04KJ. Three auto parts stores, 4-5 different filters, none of them were correct!! I guess it has something to do with they switched the trannies around a bunch. Who knows. Bottom line, a regular parts store is probably not going to give you the correct filter.

Also, you definitely need the newer +4 ATF, which most places will have, but not all.

On my girlfriend's 04 KJ, it took almost exactly 5 quarts with the filter change. Normal procedure is once everything is bolted up, throw 4 in, start it, shift through gears, and check the level. My XJ takes exactly 4 quarts with a filter change....so I'm glad I picked the extra 5th quart up!!

Oh, and doing a filter change gets roughly half of the ATF out. There is a lot held up in the valving of the tranny and in the torque converter. Changing the fluid, even though it's only half of it, is very good for the auto transmission. Adding an aux tranny cooler will make it last much much longer. They are a must for anyone who tows stuff or wheels with an auto.

Not hard at all. Just cut a tranny line (with the motor not running) and run some tranny hose (not fuel line hose, gotta use specifically tranny hose, and some will come with the cooler) to the cooler, then run it out of the cooler and back to the other side of the cut line.

Check out jeepin.com for a write-up.

If you never want to deal with transmission problems, put a tranny cooler on any and every automatic transmission equipped vehicle you own.

ATF+4 is synthetic, you can use Amsoil ATF to but that's it(all others will harm the tranny). It should have ATF+4 in it already.

I'd take it to Jeep and have the thing completely drained and filters changed. It can be pricey but worth it. Automatics scare me anyhow.

But changing part of the tranny oil is like only changing a litre of engine oil every change.
