I recently purchased a shift kit for my Jeep but I am unsure if im up to the task of putting it in. I usually do everything to my Jeep which is why Im in a tight spot since Ive never worked on trannys. I know that I need to drop the valve body, but thats about it. I just do not trust another person to work on my Jeep. Im coming up on the 30k mark so Im going to go ahead and change the filter out while Im in there.

Has anyone does this before? I have just about everything I need except the know how. Anyone have any advice or a write-up? I read over the instructions that came with the kit and they suck. Evidently this kit works with 800 different trannys so they made the instructions for ALL of them. There are exceptions, you must do this, you must do that, blah blah.. Why cant you just make some instructions that tell you what to do?

That's because the destructions are made for the pros(tranny guy's) and will confuse the heck out of a novice.I have put many shift kits in,but none in a 42RLE,mostly turbo 350/400's,700R4's,and C6's.Sometime soon I'll be doing my 45RFE(and possiblly USAFCOP's too),already got the intructions and it seems real easy, maybe about 1-2 hours for the first one but probally less then a hour for the second.Besides just saying let the pro's handle it I have nothing else to recommend besides if you don't feal comfy doing it,DON'T(trust me it's real easy to mess up the valve body real quick and easy),remember your dealing with the most expensive part of the auto tranny, the valve body.

I put mine in my 45rfe. No problems on that part of the install. The rtv i used for the pan gasket was leaking like sob though. There's a thread around here on that somewhere. Anyway I dont know how much different the 42 is. Yes the instructions suck but once you get the valve body out they seem to make sense. I dont think you'll have a problem, you seem pretty mechanically inclined.

I agree with you 100% on not letting anyone else work on the kj. Hell i was nervous about letting the shop do an alignment on it after i put the lift on.

Jeepjeepster is the instructions simialer to these-----http://www.apsprecision.com/45RFE%20Shift%20Kit/45_545RFE%20Instructions.pdf------? If so then the 42RLE is similar to the 45RFE,if not then any help from the 45RFE install is not going to help you at all. Each tranny is different as far as installing a shift kit, some you have to drill, some you don't,some you replace many parts, some you don't.Those instructions for the 45RFE is so simple I don't understand how bad the one's for the 42RLE can be since the same company makes both shift kits.

Thanks tjkj.. I do know that you DO NOT need to drill with the 42rle. Ill take pics of the parts and instructions tomorrow..

Those instructions look WAY to easy. Are there any seals that need to be replaced when you drop the valve body? Will any more oil come out when I drop it? I would actually like for more oil to come out so I could replace more..

I may put it in this friday after work.. I would also have all day Saturday to work on it(well, got a date that night), but I go back to school sunday(2 hour trip)..

Sorry, I sure cannot help, but your frustrations with the technical instructions remind me of a good old book"Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance." Good read. Good luck with your kit.

Those intructions seem pretty self-explanatory,shouldn't be hard at all.The internal repair is for the 604(as far as I understand the intructions) tranny as stated in the page you have a pic of and need to do some disassembly of the tranny(out of the vehicle).

Shouldn't,unless you ruin one of the supplied one's or the reusable one's.Just watch the plate seperating the valvebody and tranny case, you can ruin that one and it's pricy, just be gentle when you drop the valvebody and you'll be fine.
