This has happened at least a half dozen times now. Always on startup or within the first mile of a trip. Occurances Widely spaced, like once a month occurance.

First the ABS light comes on with an audible alert, then the Brake light comes on within a second. No apparent brake issues, they work like a champ, and ABS is not disabled, I've tested them. No codes are thrown at least to the OBDII connector.

Shutting down and restarting the car clears the indication. Last time it happened I couldn't stop and restart as I was in traffic. There were no issues with the brakes so I kept going, then I noticed that neither the odometer or trip meter were updating.

I'm suspecting this double bus master issue that prevents the scanguage from working all the time is the culprit. I know after driving a while with my scanguage connected the Scanguage stops working- presumably because the other bus master has taken over arbitrating the bus. I wonder if this is a case of neither computer taking control.

Anyone else seen this before.

Have you noticed any brake odor? One of my rear brake ABS sensor seems to like collecting dust, and as a result small brake pressure is applied by the ABS system... if you have this problem I suspect a visit to the dealer will provide the same "replace the whole ABS box" as it happened to me.

No, no brake odor, this occurs right after startup or within a mile or so of home. I replaced the right rear caliper about 2 months ago, but thats a seperate issue and wasn't accompanied by this indication. I didn't see any speed sensor back there when I changed the caliper, just a brake line and a cable for the e-brake.

I don't suspect there's anything wrong with the ABS system, Because if I stop and restart the vehicle, the indications clear on there own, and I can go a month without a re-occurance. In other cars I've owned, when the ABS light comes on, the ABS system is disabled to prevent problems with braking, Thats not occuring on my vehicle. ABS still works, but the odometer stops updating, No other indication that there is any braking problems as far as I can tell.

I think this is a computer issue. Could be an speed sensor that sets the condition, but my computer seems to be losing its mind when it gets into this state.

Yes, Speedo keeps indicating I'm going too fast, but Odometer says I've passed thru a black hole

I think that rules out the speed sensor in the rear diff.

So it could be some metal or something on the wheel speed sensors easy to check..or...some little wire/connector going bad somewhere..much harder to check. How deep have you been in water?

Up to the bumper once last fall. hmmm.... you thinking one of the front wheel sensors?

Seems so intermittent but I can say I didn't see it before I played in the creek.

I had something, just like that. It turned out to be the main wiring harness from the motor up along and under the fuel filter was being cut by the fuel filter bracket. Check that harness....

I think I saw a thread discussing this very thing. As I remember the 05 models fuel filter bracket is a little lower than the 06 and wasn't as susceptable to this issue.

But the symptoms could certainly be caused by nick in a wire. I'm going to start by checking the wiring harness and then take the front wheels off and take a look at the speed sensors.

Anyone know if the odometer runs off either wheel speed sensor or just the left or right one?

Speedometer and odometer are read off the speed sensor located in the rear diff. You'll see it if you look at it. I suspect that or the associated wiring harness.

How often? Have you noticed the odometer thing? Any differences in symptoms?

This really looks to me like two problems.

First I'm getting some sort of sensor input from the ABS controller or speed sensors, only intermittently and only after the vehicle has been sitting for awhile, like overnight.
Second, The inputs from the sensors/controller are confusing the computer, causing it to lock up.

The strange thing is that the speedo works fine, but odometer doesn't when it gets into this state. The condition clears on the next restart, and a month later it reoccurs.

Hard to fix an issue that you can't reproduce. My choices are to shotgun it (start replacing parts randomly) or to wait until it progresses to the next stage (reoccurs more often or fails completely)

The strange thing is that the speedo works fine, but odometer doesn't when it gets into this state. The condition clears on the next restart, and a month later it reoccurs.

Mine is similar, but more often. Sometimes, almost everytime I drive it. A restart cures it, until the next time. Speedo works, odo doesn't. ABS & Brake light are on. ABS function is not impaired.

I might be due for pads, as I have around 60K miles. Does this car have tone rings for the ABS to pickup signals from? My other car does, and as they get displaced from pad wear or dirty or dislodged, I get an ABS light, with not ABS malfunction.

I had a similar problem last year. The ABS light would come and the cluster gauges would go nuts. The tach and speedo would wildly go from minimum to maximum and then go dead. Then after a bit everything would return to normal. The problem turned out to be an intermittent short in the wiring. If I remember correctly it was in the connection to a speed sensor in the rear end. I got the impression from the service department that they have seen this problem before.

Hope this helps.

It might be good to cross post this in the General section sice this probelm is not CRD specific. Some of the gassers may have had the same issue and resolved it.

I had this same thing happen and it was the ABS sensor mounted on the rear differential. The same thing can be started by excessive spinning of rear tires.
If I can help further let me know.

What kind of frequency of occurance did you have, Daily, weekly, monthly or did it just go bad and stopped working?

When it first failed the problem would clear on restart and go maybe a few blocks then lock in fault mode. Occasionally I could go several miles before the fault occurred again. After the dealer repaired the problem I noticed it going into failure mode a few times when spinning the tires on snow and ice in 2wd mode, always reset on next startup. Haven't had a recurrence since the LSD was installed. If you need I can send you the copy of the repair ticket.

I had the same thing happen to me three days ago but it wasn't my libby it was my ford ranger. It ended up being the ABS sensor (speed sensor) that plugs into the rear end. It cost me $18.00 and took less than 15 min. to replace. Perhaps the liberty part is just as cheap and as easy to change.

Someone told me that metal shavings from the differential attach themselves to the sensor because it is magnetic. So maybe you chould just clean it and reinstall it.
