being left out in the cold like the Liberty CRD was done with the VM engine
You do know it's still be made, and still being sold...just not in the US? It's not like Chrysler just dropped the VM Motori powerplant. They are widely used in Europe.
It's a global village friends. It's so easy to communicate with people overseas via the internet, that they might as well be next door. Parts, knowledge, etc....all available at the click of a mouse.
Seems to me that some people are having issues, but not the majority. Some are implementing solutions that, in my humble opinion, aren't needed. Like replacing the fuel filter with the CAT unit. Sure, it's a better filter, but the stock one seems to work fine for me and the scores of other Liberty/Cherokee owners all over the world. The ORM mod is a good thing, as is the EHM/Provent. Other than that, just leave the dang thing alone and drive it. When the POS torque converter craps out, replace it with the Suncoast unit. You know it's coming, so as Killer Beaz would say, "Save up!".
I know MB makes great cars, but I have seen lots of them in the shop. There is a shop near here called Wursters Foreign Car Repair. They make a FINE living working on MB cars. Drive by there any day and take a look at SCADS of Mercedes sitting waiting to be repaired. Then take a look at the repair cost for those cars. They don't list the prices in dollars, but in "arms and legs". I think I'd rather pay for 10 $100 repairs than one $1000 repair. Sure, the money is the same, but it's a cashflow issue. I don't happen to have $1000 laying around, but I could swing $100 every so often.
I bought my CRD for a number of reasons.
1) It tows my trailer with ease
2) It's comfortable
3) It was the most affordable diesel I could find...even more so than a Jetta or Passat
4) 4x4 is a plus. I like to venture down muddy roads every now and then.
5) Fuel mileage is EXCELLENT for a 4x4 SUV that tows 5000lbs
6) Nothing out there can match the towing performance and fuel mileage of the CRD. Not one at any price by any manfacturer.
I think the little CRD is a diamond in the rough. It needs a little polishing, but once you do...it shines. Just a great vehicle. If you don't want to put the time in to perfect the CRD, or you've got enough money to drop on a Mercedes, big diesel pickup, Grand Cherokee, or Toureg...then the CRD isn't for you. Doesn't make it a POS that's going to fall apart. Just means it doesn't meet your needs.
If I had the income to afford what I really wanted, I'd be driving a big Cummins Dodge. Sadly, the one I'd want specs out to over $56,000....a far cry from the $19,000 I paid for the CRD. Heck...I could buy a second (and almost a third) CRD and have three of them for what the Dodge would cost me.
The sky is not falling folks. These are fine little vehicles. Just do your maintenance, and drive the holy pee out of them. It's a tool...use it as such and when it's all used up...go buy another.
