The service manual maintenance schedule has drain and fill of the front and rear axle listed for every 12,000 miles. Do people really do it that often? I've been using RedLine synthetic and it would get pretty pricey on that schedule. I know this is the "B" schedule but it looks like the "A" schedule is for vehicles sitting in storage.

B is generally considered the service cycle for commercially use and A is considered for personal daily driver use. Taxi cab versus commuter vehicle.

That seems to make sense but the "B" list includes 10 conditions, 1 of which is commercial use. Some of the others seem much more like I would define my use, especially 1,2,5,6 and some 7

1.) Day or night temperatures are below 32°F (0°C).
2.) Stop and go driving.
3.) Extensive engine idling.
4.) Driving in dusty conditions.
5.) Short trips of less than 10 miles (16.2 km).
6.) More than 50% of your driving is at sustained
high speeds during hot weather, above 90°F (32°C).
7.) Trailer towing.
8.) Taxi, police, or delivery service (commercial service).
9.) Off-road or desert driving.
10 If equipped for and operated with E-85 (ethanol)
fuel.

The reason I ask is my dealer gives the impression of being hostile to customers who do their own work. Their recommendations (which I always decline) are a lot closer to the "B" schedule than "A". Although I try to keep good records, I know their records indicate a poorly maintained vehicle. I wouldn't be surprised if I ever have a driveline problem during the 7/70 period it would come up that I repeatedly declined their "driveline service".

Thanks.

That's what I did. It will last me the next 1.5 years until it goes to the bone yard.

Unfortunately, I fall into the severe service category living on a farm, driving dirt roads, towing fuel trailers, and off road checking on fences, cattle, etc.

I changed mine out at about 5K and went to synthetics and am going with 50K changes after that.

Either way you go, FORGET THE RTV on that 8.25 rear axle!!!! Use a gasket! I got a couple from

www.lubelocker.com

I have even reused them before with good results. Sure makes messing with the RTV, as a teenage would say, "So 20th Century". Of course, if you like scraping off the old RTV, applying the new, waiting for it to set up and then hoping it won't leak.... then by all means have fun with it. I've got better things to to than waste time on a rear end. I can just unbolt, pry off the cover, drain, reuse the gasket and bolt up, fill up, and I am done.

I know I may get a argument, but using a good synthetic and extending the drains will not void a warranty. Unless you tell them you are doing crazy things, then how would they know you are in the severe service catagory anyway. The MM warranty act of '75 does not allow them to legally deny warranty just because you do your own work, use other oil products, or even extend the drains unless it it shown that the oil caused the problem. It is always important to keep good maintenance records. heck, you are using a computer, how difficult is it to set up a simple spread sheet and log the maintenance? having those good records also will allow you to negotiate a better trade in value (as per the automobile dealers association quidelines). I am sure that I am the exception because I have a myriad of vehicles and equipment that I use for business and pleasure, but it is so simple to keep accurate maintenance records that I even keep one on my John Deere lawn mower.

Hey Joe... is that gasket from Advanced a reusable steel core gasket like the lubelocker ones? Not trying to have a food fight over who's gasket is better, just would like to see how the one from Advanced compares to the lubelocker one. I know the lubelocker goes on "dry". No need for any gasket sealer compound and I can confirm it is reusable as well.

It does not say but it's a Fel-Pro brand and is blue so I "assume" it's a one shot deal  But for the price and locally available it's convient

That's what I'm doing also.

It's pretty strange that the owner's manual recommends differential service every 12k but doesn't recommend changing out the tranny fluid until 60k.

Chris.
I don't know what it is but in the FAQ there's something about it having drain and fill plugs. I do know it's a aluminum housing and we don't dare lift the jeep by the housing   :o
