I just finished changing the oil in my KJ for the first time since I bought it. I know I've read on here numerous times to use 5 qts. of oil, so I went ahead and poured the whole 5 qts in without thinking. When I checked the dipstick it reads about 1/4-1/2" past the "safe" zone. Did I overfill? If so, does that mean I get to do another oil change?

Just gotta ask,did you let the oil drain from the oil pan for at least 10 min? Did you put a new filter on(again just making sure)? If yes to both then did you start your KJ and let run for a few min(to fill the oil filter that holds about a 1/2qt by itself),then shut off and wait about 10 min before checking again? If so you may have mistakinly added more then 5 qts. When I change mine the oil reads about a 1/8" above the safe zone(hash marks) after sitting for more than 10 min,and I add 5qts.

Yep, let it drain and changed the filter. I checked the level before letting it run though - a storm broke as I was putting the dipstick back in, so I grabbed my stuff and came inside. I'll check it again in the morning I guess.

I just had to ask, start it up then check the oil level after it has ran for a few min and then set for about 10 shut off.Not checking it after it has run will read high because the filter has not been filled yet.

It seems to me, and I am not sure if this is accurate, but if you use a good quality oil filter it can take a little more oil. If you use a cheepo filter the oil reads higher on the dip stick. Once again, I am not possitive of this, but it seems to be true. So, if it is true, did you put on a piece of krap filter?

Also, if it does bother you, instead of changing the oil all over again, just put on a new oil filter and add just enough oil to get it to the right mark. Good luck!

Mine has always been a tad over full when I add 5 quarts.. If you are sure you added 5 quarts, changed the filter, and drained all the old oil out, you should be good. 8)

Definitely run the engine for a minute or two and then check. Mine read full with only 4 qts until I ran it. Once I ran it, I put in the 5th quart and it ended up perfectly at the top of the hash marks. And I even pre-filled my new oil filter by pouring fresh oil into it before installing it.
