How about adding an extra fuel filter head ahead of the original with http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/ ... Part=24770 and the cat2 filter you would get the benifit of the absolute 2micron filter and the other base is under $20 from Fleetfilters. Also you wouldn't have the leaking problem that some are and no problems on warranty cause you didn't modify any parts.

Just picked up a NAPA Gold fuel filter for our '05 CRD. Wix filter, but it's MADE IN CHINA!

Looks just like the OEM unit, though, and seems high quality on the OUTSIDE.

I'm nervous.....

I would not touch it with a 10 foot pole. Look at the Chinese record of quality lately on food, toys and now tires.

As long as it is made to OEM specs don't worry about it. Almost everything we use in everyday life in manufactured in China including many OEM parts for cars made in this country. No offense to Old Navy but our own American engineering is probably just as bad if not worse than our Asian friends(case in point; the CRD). Anyway I'll take anything that NAPA sells over OEM any day of the week.

Normally I would agree with you man, but after seeing the problems the Chinese are having lately, I would pass. Now if it was made in Tiwan or Japan I would not worry, but for now I would pass on the Chinise stuff.

Indeed. We get a halfshaft support bracket that goes on the Caliber CRD that is shipped overseas. The whole thing is cast, machined, and assembled in China. Amazingly, it's quite a nice piece.

On that same note, DCX is NOTORIOUS for underengineering stuff in the name of cheapness. Indeed, I wonder if the OEM filter isn't worse than a Chinese filter specified by WIX, whos butt would be on the line for a filter-caused fuel system failure? The Chinese CAN make world class quality. You just have to PAY for it. They aren't stupid - they just are masters at dumbing down (or cheapening) a product to any price point you desire, and have no qualms about doing it. A $5 toaster at Wal-Mart??? Sure!! It might only toast bread twice before it's junk, but it's still a toaster!

After I had posted my statement above I remembered that the same thing happened in recent years with MB parts being built in India. Two cases that I know of concerns oil filters and injectors, both were crap. These were not OEM ordered/spec parts but aftermarket parts however it was later found out that the parts have been built as required and with no quality checks to ensure proper working parts. The oilfilters were full of dead bugs, and scrap cotton sweep up off the ginning floor along with the sand and gravel, the injectors were a quality control issue with 3 out of 4 failing when checked before installing in the engine. I have however seen some might fine quality machine goods from India before and since.

my sister works at a snow plow manufacturer here in Leavenworth, and they in the last year moved all their cast parts to a Chinese company due to the cost savings, and IMPROVED quality of the parts received. Scary when American employees are not willing to make quality products for their own countrymen.

It's not a matter of being willing, it's a numbers game.

We work with a Taiwanese subcontractor - in the US - 1 employee runs about 10 systems and they're trying to figure out

how to make that 20, in Taiwan 1 employee runs 2 - same systems same production, so who can see a problem quicker?

who can find the problem faster? who can fix it faster? and it's still cheaper over there.

Filtering ability varies depending on how the manufactuer reports it.
When it comes to HEPA air filters, I don't know of any materials that
are better than 10 microns. The bacteria that they are supposed to filter
out are usually in the 3-7 micron range.
How does this work? Very few particles (bacteria or otherwise) are
symmetrically shaped. They could be 1-2 microns tall but 11 microns long.
So, some material gets stopped (lengthwise) while others get through.
The solution is in having multiple layers to get down to the 2-3 micron
range.
So, the Mopar filter probably DOES use a 10 micron filter paper but uses
multiple layers that WILL bring that number down. For all anybody
knows, the CAT filter could use a material that is only good for 15
microns but being a bigger filter it has more room for additional layers.

Then again, I have not tested any of these filters. This is just my two
cents on the matter. The only way to truly know is to conduct controlled
tests.
