Hey guys and gals, my wife apparently hasn't been driving my KJ since im over seas, and my battery is now dead. do any of you know what model number i need to replace it? or better yet, i was thinking about getting a yellow top. does anyone maybe no the part number for the one that fits in a 2006 CRD? i would think the OEM optima would be under warranty, but she cant get a straight answer from the stealership. I wont be home till November, so i would like to tell her what model/part number she needs to get. :?:

optimas are not known for coming back to life after losing charge. make sure to keep a trickle charger on the optima if you are planing on having the truck sit.

I thought my optima was dead after I got the jeep delivered, i had left the battery charger on 6 amp for several hours(that usually runs up a traditional battery so that I can at least start the car) and I got nothing.

I left the optima on the trickle charger overnight and it started up fine then.

Try having her charge it overnight on trickle charge.

My Optima Red Top is an Optima part number 4868999AC. I did a quick search and it looks like the Optima Warranty is 3 year free replacement.

Did you have the BMC TSB done that is designed to not drain the battery? If not you might want to check and see if that is part of the problem.

The replacement is neither a red or yellow top, it is a black top Mopar battery which was changed on mine.

interesting, so they dont put another Optima in there if it dies? and as far as the yellow top goes, i was wondering what part number fits the KJ, so in case i upgraded, or had to flat out buy a new one.

I think that's more of a 'cost savings' on the dealerships part. I would be pissed that the ~$130 battery is replaced with one that's most likely half the cost and not the same!

There is not a real part number for the Optima... They are called Yellow/Red tops, You can buy them at any boat shop, after market car shops and the biggest seller is car audio shops. (real big with the large speaker crowd) As stated above, they are really hard to kill, and Batt. under 5 years old just dont "die" Im willing to bet if it is indeed "dead" there is a larger problem under the hood. Can she "jump start" the car? if so then it is the batt, if not then the car is running off of the batt and the ALT is bad. Another way to test the charging system is to get the car started, then unhook the RED + side of the batt. again if the car stays running the charging system is fine, if the car dies, then the charging system is bad and is killing the batt.

but in short to answer your question, all optima's are the same SIZE (L*W*H) and will fit just fine. if your running a lot of extra acc. (audio amps, KC lights, spot lights, etc..) then go with the Red top, if your running mostly stock then stay with the yellow.

Hope this helps

While the MOPAR battery solution might be the dealer and the Jeep solution I would think that like tires you could handle the Optima warranty directly with any Optima dealer and the Optima warranty seems to be 3 year free replacement.

The Optima RedTop 34R is what is used used in the CRD, it is a reversed pole battery. The battery is a neg ground battery with positive pole where the neg pole is on most US batteries. My Magnum had this Euro arraingment also.

From what I have read about Optima batteries (I have 3 in different uses) is that when completely drained, they must be recharged with at least 7 amps. Best to use a smart charger that is designed for AGM batteries to limit the top voltage going to them.

Sam's Club has a very nice electronic "smart" charger that does wet, gel and AGM battery types. It also has "recondition and equalize and start" settings. It was just under $50 and has built in storage for the power and charg cables :D

The mopar replacement looks like a Optoma battery being it has 6 round verticle chambers, it just has a black top that's all.

I wish one of you were near me, I have a brand new Optima 34R on the work bench that will not fit in my 05 MB for sale. $85 would take it home a $160 battery. Maybe when the GTG comes around in Oct someone will be here that will need it and I will get it a proper home. Untill then it will be put on the trickle charger once or twice a week to keep it properly charged.

Before you ask, no it has not been used and I have one just like it in my '91 MB diesel.

I thought the yellow top was the deep cycle for all the extra acc.???
