Thanks. Just a quick question: Is changing transmission fluid as easy as changing the engine oil??

yes it is just drop the pan remove the filter, install new one & replace fluid not sure on qts though ?? had the dealer do mine last time for $100 but it can be done in the driveway just MAKE SURE your on level suface & you remove only a few bolts till the front or back of the pan can fall down slightly to empty fluid if not your going to be in for a bath

Its not as easy as the engine oil b/c you must drop the entire transmission oil pan. The filter is above that pan which is full of tranny fluid. Ive read it take 5 quarts, but Im not 100% sure.

If its something youve never done then it may be best to find a local mechanic to do it. They would have a better price.

That's closer to the price for fluid changes for the front and rear diffs, transmission, engine, and transfer case.

If you do it right -you need a system to flush the old oil - takes about 14 quarts to fill, the 5-6 qt version doesn't get any fluid out of the torque converter

You need to know there are Two filters, not one.

A Flush is something extra and not need if you ain't got water in it or burnt fluid.

You need to make sure the lot number of the filter ain't the recalled one that gets a split in it, causing the fluid to leak down after its been sitting. There is a DELAYED ENGAGEMENT TSB somewhere with that part# listed.
(YES, THEY WILL SELL YOU THE BAD ONE!) I had that misfortune. Yes, the Tranny will slip until it picks up pressure again.

About $90 is what they should charge and another $75-100 if you want the flush.

You can do it yourself, by the time you buy parts, fluid, and hassle...Maybe its better to pay.

I take it he has the 2003 liberty so he may or may not have the tranny with two filters.

Ive never heard about the filter splitting ferg.. Do you have a part number for that or anything?

Excellent point that many people forget. This is why I change my Transmission fluid every 20,000 miles in my Jeep and my Dodge Cummins. I go a little overboard and use the Amsoil ATF which can be changed at longer intervals, but I’m still overkill on maintenance. For me it’s a piece of mind, plus I’m one of those weird guys that enjoys changing the motor oil, transmission and transfer case fluid, and the differential fluids. Just to give you an idea, I had the Transmission fluid changed on my Cummins at 8,000 miles and topped off my Jeep at 2,000 miles when I had the shift kit installed. This way the oil will be mainly Amsoil ATF and not such a blend between Mopar and Amsoil the second time I change the fluid. Each time you change the fluid, the more PURE it becomes. It’s debatable whether or not it’s cost effective what I do, but I’ve never had to replace a transmission or T.C. I’ve taken an automatic transmission to 247,000 miles and it was still working when I sold it. So perhaps in the end……………it’s worth it if you keep your vehicles that long.

My stealership charges $199 for the fluid change. Local Midas charges the same, so while pricey at least the price is the same. Had it done once in 80K miles at around 60K.

Do they still make tranny fluid out of whale blubber?

Yall need to know: Transmission fluid can cause paralysis, cause it ain't whale blubber no MO.

For gods sake wear gloves, eye protection, and at all cost keep your mouth closed if you do it yourself.

I know whats happining to the worlds bee population too.

Remember you can be safe from destruction too. John 5:24

They shoul charge you northin boys a bunch of money for a fluid change. Its 85 bucks at IPAC in SA, TEXAS...wit 2 filters.

Gloves? I usually end up wearing at least 3 different fluids before the day is over. I save the tranny till last b/c it cleans off my hands fairly well.

Yeah, triclorethylene cleans well too and its bad news. The most dangerous thing (to your body) in your vehicle is Tranny fluid

Though I am a proud "northin-er" I graduated from high school in po-dunk, Alabama, so I know they teach math down south. If you are running a business, and wish to turn a profit, how can you use ~$80 worth of supplies + at least $25 per hour in labor costs, charge only $85 to do a job & stay in business?

Sure they get parts at cost but even at $40 for supplies & one hour of $25 labor they won't be in business long. They are cutting a corner somewhere.

KJP,

Cause the filters and fluid ain't costing them mucha nothin. Its costin them less than $12 in parts and fluid and your in and out in 30 min. Thats how a 5 star dealer does it.

I gradutated Citronelle HS (Redneck Trash) class of 1982 by the way of George Hall (Maysville Killing field) and BC Rain. (DIP River Rats).

The only thing I learned in school was:
How to kill a man with a fork
Drink and drive
Shoot roadsigns over the roof while drinkin & drivin
Run from cops on dirt roads

I learn't math in college.

Oh yeah, After I ended the Cold War and retired in 2004, they named a school after me:
