The Diesel Accord might just replace my TDI Jetta...but will it be as fun to drive?

A diesel Pilot could replace my KJ...but they would have to price it very, very nicely.

And Honda could replace GM, DC, and Ford very nicely. In 2010, what will you buy? An American brand car which has a bad reliability rating and pathetic mileage, or a Honda with twice the mpg and a great brand reliability, especially in the Accord?

Wake up, big three! The clock is ticking.
My guess, (to borrow from a favemovie) in the end there will be only one...

Honda robots.

http://asimo.honda.com/

A 3.5 liter diesel in a Ridgeline might lure me away from my Liberty CRD. Not an off-roader for sure, but I just need high clearance and 4wd for rough access roads hunting and fishing, and for snow travel during the winter. I'd imagine a 3.5 should be quite the torque monster in a relatively light vehicle like the Ridgeline.... with that wheelbase it should be a great towing rig for small to mid-size boats (assuming that unibody frame can handle the load).

Good friend has the 2005 Honda CR-V CDTi and it is ok with the 6spd. it is nowhere close to the Jeep. The same engine is in the Accord and Civic. Not sure what is in the HR-V or the FR-V. Hmm have to look at the Jazz, Fit and Stream.

If Honda releases a diesel Accord in the U.S. in 2009, bye bye Liberty! I'll buy one of these things in a heartbeat.

I can certainly live with the benefits of Honda reliability and 52mpg! :)

Early reviews on the 2008 Accord diesel are turning up 52 mpg test scores. See:

That is a car though. He said he would ditch the Liberty. A normal accord bests the Liberty currently so I was questioning his logic.

It's a diesel thing...not a car vs SUV thing.

We currently have three Jeeps in our family. Our new Wrangler 4 door has as much inside room as the Liberty and has enough towing capacity for our needs.

My commute currently is 115 miles a day. Although the Liberty gets the best mileage of all of our Jeeps it's no match for a diesel accord. A "normal" accord (gasser) gets better mileage but unleaded regular is currently higher than diesel so the money saved switching to a gas accord is relatively minimal. But when you do the math comparing my Liberty vs a diesel accord my annual fuel cost savings are over $2k a year! That gap will only get larger as fuel prices increase.

If I want to go off road I'll use a Wrangler (they're more fun!)
If the weather gets too bad I'll use a Wrangler (or stay home)

For me, it's a win win situation. :D

Now, if Chrysler would re-introduce a new Liberty CRD or Wrangler CRD, that may change things depending on their fuel mileage. That's because the emotional part of me is biased towards Jeep.

Honda is hinting at a 3.5 liter diesel in the Pilot, Ridgeline, and their minivan. Given Honda's record on high MPG vehicles, I'd bet the Pilot, if it is brought to market, will at least equal the CRD in the MPG department. Given that it will have a more efficient transmission and drive train (albiet with no low range and less beefyness), I'd suspect it will surpass it by a good margin.

During my quest to replace my car with the CRD I looked at a lot of SUV's. The Pilot got pretty much the same mileage as anything else in the class and required premium fuel to boot. Some friend of mine drove the ACURA eqivalent for about three years but finally bailed because of the poor mileage and premium requirement.

The Honda Accord Hybrid is biting the dust for much the same reason. When it came out I took a gander but there was no significant economic improvement over the gas model. Others noticed the same and it didn't sell. Let's see if they have learned their lessons or if they are beginning to plan like Detroit.

I always wondered why Honda didn't do this sooner with the old
Passport/Isusu Rodeo.
Isusu is supposed to be the worlds biggest producer of diesel enginges
but you wouldn't know it by their vehicles sold here.

Chevy's Duramax is an Isuzu.

Honda sold relatively few passports, much like izusu selling the hombre, it was mearly a placeholder to keep their name in the game.

honda selling the passport gives them an SUV background and name, even when they werent producing suvs.

That is not correct. The MDX requires premium, the Pilot does not (though there was an error in the 2005 owners manual that said otherwise). There's a thread on it up on the Honda Pilot owners web site:

The Pilot is rated at 17/22. Nothing to write home about, but it is certainly in the top tier of similar-sized SUV's.

I was invited to the local dealers "Pilot and Civic Hybrid" roll out in 2003 (?) and was told then that the Pilot took premium. The fact was repeated whenever I looked at one after, in write-ups I read and it was certainly true of the MDX. If Honda errored in their marketing that was certainly a huge error on their part. Either that or they retuned the engine in later products. Ultimately the Pilot motor found it's way into the Saturn Vue but that was likely 2005.

I wouldn't be too quick to knock the Pilot. My sister bought a Pilot about 6 months before I got my Liberty CRD. Have driven her Pilot several times, found it to be a much more refined vehicle than my Liberty....and for the $30K+ she dropped to buy this, it had better be. She runs on regular gas all the time without any problems, seeing low to mid 20's on the highway. It also has not seen the dealership shop since pre-delivery prep...more than I can say for my ex-CRD.
