Should be more than enough room to weld up some anchors for the roof conection.

POST PICS when you do it.

Price is of no concern?
http://www.garvin-industries.com/roofracks.html
They have a sport series rack that mounts directly to the factory rails of our KJs...it's a whopping $450 from Rusty's and other places.

I would get their sport or offroad series rack. Very modular, you can do ANYTHING to it. Garvin has a lot of accessories for their 6" racks, but they are also rather pricey.

I camp on atop of my offroad series (48x80x6"). Some find this hard to believe...pictures will be posted next time I camp

if i get the 4x4x4 do you think that i will have enough room to have some pieces of steel welded to the defender to bolt up to the stock bolts on the roof? i do not have my stock renegade roof rails, but i did make some money so i could buy my rack.
Mines the 5' wide version, just remember that the roof rails(along with the roof) are wider torwards the front then the rear by a couple of inches each side.If I would have gotten the 4' version I would have had to use crossrails to attach it,with the 5' version I just U-bolted right to the OEM rails via the mount points already on the rack. Here is a pic of the rear of my rack from the rear.

Couldn't say,but I have my rack centered on the rails(side to side and front to back) and there is about 8" or so from the rack to the end of the roof.

okay i did a really quick photoshop (i am not very good) to see what it would look like...
Image

also, i just called my local 4 wheel parts store, and they said that there is not a defender rack that is wider than it is long... no universal rack either. they said they could get the 4x4x4 or the 4x5x4 but there is no 5x4x4? is he telling the truth, b/c i went to oru's website and it agrees?

this is the 4'x5'x4", so this the "universal" http://www.offroadunlimited.com/ProductCart/PC/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=1643&idproduct=1080

I just got one of these today in 60x48x6. He can make any size you wish. It's solid, but comes unpainted.

tjkj,

u sure that is the 5 foot wide rack? oru doesn't even list the 4x5x4" rack as being compatable for the libby.
They do show the 4x4x4 as the one for libby with their mounting things

My first choice, for sure. From everything I've seen, I think they're the best looking and best built since you replace the stock cheapo roof rails with RL's steel rails (which by the way bolt right into the factory holes).

But if you're budget minded, then I think Black Widow is a good choice.

The ones from Rocky Road have a tighter bend in them thuse leaving more length for the rack to be longer or to be moved toward the back or the front. They are plenty strong also and the angles of the bends look better. Maybe not as thick as others which I am not sure of. Weight comes with thickness. Most of the racks are only rated for around 200 lbs. anyway with the exception of a few rated at 300 lbs.

I have always used Thule roof rack systems.
Since 1983.
I still have original Thule rack, small gear basket, ratchet tie down cargo straps, 13 cubic foot ski box.
This summer I'll be buying the Thule 690XT MOAB Basket. $525.00
http://www.rackattack.com/product-pages ... basket.asp
And the,
Thule 691XT MOAB Basket Extension $170.00
http://www.rackattack.com/product-pages ... ension.asp

$695.00
12% PST & GST.
$778.40

The bonus with this M.O.A.B. Mother Of All Baskets, is that I can also mount my ski box on top of the basket.
Loads of cargo carrying capacity!
And they look very good.

The most popular roof racks do not need all that extra length to center, which is where you want the rack for proper loading. The RL 2 bend design lets the rack sit lower thus keeping the center of gravity lower. The RL rails are also not very heavy but made out of stout 1.5" 0.120" walled cold rolled steel for more then enough load rating that will exceed the limit of the roof.
