235/85/R16 Maxxis BigHorns

We're thinking of getting some of the skinny Maxxis pizza cutters for the KJ's new trail tires.

Currently run Rubi Moab/ 245/75/R16 MTRs for the trail and 245/75/R16 BFG AT/KO (stock rims) for the street.

Have a Rusty's 2.5" front spring/strut assembly (OME strut), Rusty's rear springs, and OME long travel rear shocks. Flattened pinch weld

Want to order a set of steel rims to go with the new rubber:
What size rim do I need for 235/85/R16 tires? 16x7 or 16x8?
What backspacing works best? (don't want to use spacers)

The current MTRs on Moab's/backspacing stuff well, the BFG's on stock rims/backspacing rub on the suspension and inner well when cut all the way

I appreciate any input from those running 235/85/R16s

Look at the Maxxis Buckshot Mudders in the same size...very tuff tire!

I will have a set of those for my KJ here pretty soon.....but in 305/75-16 sizing..... :twisted:

I think the 7" rim is plenty as the 235/85 is narrow enough that it won't need that wide of a rim and it would be more likely to pop a bead on the wider rim.

What back spacing for the rims do you folks recommend? and are there any other modifications I need to fit them?

well im not too sure if this is totally gonna actually be right but lets just use a little basic math

k so the moabs stuff well.. so those rims are 16x8 w/ 5" b/s well those rims have 245's on them.. so a 9.7" wide tire..

heres my math..
so those tires will hang off each side of the rim by (1.7"/2) .85" so basically that set up is really

----> -5" + 8" + .85" = 3.85"

so therefore to get the same effect from your new rims you will need to solve for X.. YAY ALGEBRA!

k so the new rims should be a 16x7 (since your running a 235) so lets run it again..

16x7 w X b/s and a tire of 235 = 9.3" wide.. so your tire will hang off again by (1.3"/2) .65" so this set up is

----> -X" + 7 + .65" = 3.85" thus X = approx 4".. so get a a rim of 16x7 w/ 4" b/s.. which just so happens to be standard b/s for major steel rims brands i.e unique, cragar

god im really sorry this was so round about.. i just let my mind really kinda go. :roll:

im not sure if this is exactly right, how i got there, but it must be kinda close or at least a similar method is really actually the right one..

Give Moose some time to chime in or just go back to some of his posts. He's talked about 235s a few times in the last few weeks, it's been a fairly popular post subject.
Some posts may start with people asking about 32 in tires, or 265/75s, etc.

I was actually hoping he would post since he has experience with that tire size...

I don't want to order the tires and rims until folks who run that set-up chime in... (just being carefull)

I ran them (235/85/16 Hercules Terra M/T) and they were just fine. They look a little skinny but stuffed without any problems...of course I had done trimming with 265/75/16's on 16x7 with 4.75" BS previously.

I now an running Hercules Terra Trac ATs 235/75/16s on a stock CRD and I love them.

Sorry, been busy with work and camp jeep. I ran the 235/85's on stock 16x7 rims They should be just fine, but you will need to remove the lower little air dam and cut a small part of the bumper down where the tire will hit it durring turns (you can't see it from above, so my wife didn't kill me!) you will need to do somethine about the wheel well liner, pound your pinch weld, and relocate the washer bottle (you don't HAVE too, but it will rub until you do). The only other thing I would recomend is installing a bump stop to limit the stuff.

Sorry for the questions, this is my first 4 x 4 and I have never lifted a vehicle. I have lowered them, but that requires cutting the bump stops that are already there.

Well, I never did it, so I'm not sure how much help I can be on this, but the general idea is that when you wheel these tires, they are going to stuff into the wheel wells, and then maybe pop your fender flairs off. So If I had kept the KJ, I would have looked at the bumpstop mount and tried to jack the tire to a stuff (all 4) and calculate how much more bumpstop I'd need. Then take the bumpstop appart and figure out how to get the extra in there. Sorry this isn't too helpful, maybe someone else could jump in here and help... Where's Eddo?!?

Go to the All J site, www.boulderbars.com and look at the Frankenlift install article on the right side of the Frankenlift site. It's a spacer put on the bottom inside the spring perch. Look on the right side on the last page.

Good info on the bumpstops - looks pretty simple.

Now I'm thinking of going with 4" backspacing - since almost every 16x7 rim seems to only have that BS. These should work OK?

I have a set of rims that are 16x7 with 4inch BS, I have to get rubber for them but they did come from another KJ & were used for 3 winters with out issue
