The 29,000 mile CRD that has been flawless up till now just died on me. I had just started it and was about to put it in gear and it died right off while still in Park. I had driven it before so it was warmed up. I cycled the key and restarted it and drove home without incident. I bled the fuel system and got quite a bit of air out of it. That surprised my because I had just bled it about a week ago. Might be headed for the shop if it happens again.

Next time you bleed the filter unclip the heating element wire harness. It is the one on the right side of the filter as you stand in front of the Jeep.

If you get air and fuel spitting out of the connection when you pump the primer, you have the same leak that several of us have experienced.

Go to the NTSB and report the leak.

I purchase a repoacement filter assembly for $150 at my dealership. It is an easy swap and the problem was resolved.

Good luck!

I'll do that. I had checked that connection before, but not this time. Glad I still have the B to B warranty.

Just checked. No leakage. No check engine lights either. Maybe a glitch with the thing that retards airflow to shut down the engine, or air in fuel. We'll see.

Welcome to the "air in my fuel' fraternity :D By the way when I got F31 flash done 4 weeks ago they also did the F37 flash that you and I were not supposed to need. It definetly changed the shift patterns for the worst. It's constantly shifting up and down at the slightest change in speed

That sucks. So far, I haven't heard the "death rattle" in the TC area. Not saying I'm immune. I thought our post Nov '05 builds were already detuned at the factory. From what I have read, I already have the shift patterns of those that had gotten the F37. We are about ready to wrap up the second year of ownership, and if this thing gives me too much grief, I'll unload it. I haven't spent too much time on it lately because of the 2007 Mustang GT that found it's way home one night. That thing is a beast.

But I definitely think that air traps up there even WITHOUT severe holes/warps/burnouts in the filter. The whole concept of a completely negative pressure fuel line BEGS for leaks of air into the system, which will collect at the highest point, in the filter. Or just normal out-gassing of the fuel. The symptoms sure sound like an air-bubble.

Meanwhile, I am hopefully covered for a new filter head under warrentee (only 28k miles....seems like I'm a slacker compared to most). Definitely had a burned out heating element, look at part of it stuck in the plug. You could hear the air hissing in.

One thing I had forgot to mention was that I had let the fuel level get down to just under 1/4 tank. Maybe, with all the sloshing around it was doing with more air volume in the tank, the fuel foamed up some over the past week and that is where the "extra" air came from. Foamy fuel. Sound farfetched???

The only time I have experinced the "two cylinder option" was about 6 weeks ago on under a 1/4 tank and just after a slow right turn. I mentioned that and others had experienced it on a full tank but they may have had noticable leaks too which I do not. I also note that my fuel gauge is more accurate now than when the CRD was new and I try not to let it get too far under 1/4 tank anymore.

Europe has standards for fuel quality and one of them is to not foam  If only we could get consistant better quality fuel in the US
