We do not get the provent system out here in South Africa and I am not the most proficient mechanic in town , therefore I am reluctant to start messing around with the elephant hose concept. I have been told that it is possible to do a makeshift repair , if you are in the middle of nowhere , by cutting out the section of hose that has perished and fitting a steel round tube section clamped by hose clamps to either end of the existing hose and this should hopefully get you from point A to B with a bit more pressure than the alternative of trying to drive with a perished hose. I have already blown a hose and believe me if you are on an overland trip when this happens you are in deep doo doo ! Can anyone tell me what the diameter of the inlet hose is as I cannot find it printed anywhere on the hose. Also , am I running any risk of mechanical damage by doing a makeshift repair like this if the situation arises ? Your comments appreciated.

You may not even need the EHM in S Africa. First check to see if you even have some of these clean air emissions things on you CRD. It is my understanding that many CRD's from outside of North America may not have these options.

I think you are confusing the CAC hose with the EHM. They have nothing to do with each other. The EHM is just a piece of hose "you add" and redirect crankcase fumes somewhere besides back into the intake system.

The CAC hose is the intercooler hose. If you are worried about the hose, you should probably carry a spare...not a bad idea

I think he's right - the EHM and the Provent - both keep the CCV blowby oil out of the intake manifold and the CAC. and an oil soaked CAC hose can degrade and break down from the oil - (probably split from the turbo pressure)

However I think his emergency repair might be a good semi-permanent fix for the hose i.e. you remove the CAC hose and replace it with a metal tube the same size - but enough rubber mounting at each end to allow flex. My concern as a repair would be that a bad CAC hose is probably bad the entire length and you wouldn't have enough 'good' hose to make the repair. and if you're carrying the metal tube - why not just carry a replacement CAC hose?

The metal tube might prevent the hose from self-destructing - but think the EHM and Provent are better - because they prevent the damage - and they prevent the oil from collecting in the intercooler itself. The oil collecting in the intercooler will probably have to be cleaned out in 100,000 miles or so - however that's a slow performance degredation - not a failure in the middle of Africa (which could be fatal - unless I watch too many Nature shows)

I do not know the internal diameter of the hose. (if it stops raining - I might try to measure it - maybe I can find it - will update if it available)

Hey Darby - in fact you were the one who suggested the steel replacement hose when he first posted about the problem in Nov

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=14550&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=cac+hose&start=0

(Okay I'm still looking for a diameter)
Didn't find it listed anywhere - if no one else has found it by tomorrow - I'll go pull a hose and measure

Are you the one with the flat aluminum roof rack? That was awsome. Do you have pics somewhere?

The intake hose is 50mm (approx 2")internal and the outlet hose is 63mm (approx 2.5") internal except for each end which is belled out to about 70mm.
Cheers

A true mandrel bent metal tube with silicon flexible hose ends was suggested earlier as a complete replacement. Right now the dealers have a "fuel grade" replacement hose available to replace the seeping OEM hose. Whether you do the EHM or not, the new replacement hose would be a good idea.

Since you mentioned that, what is the magic incantation to get a dealer to swap out your hoses for you? I'm thinking something like, "I noticed some oil leaking out of my turbo and the entire inside of the intercooler hose is soaked in oil? Is that safe with an air-rated hose?"

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I managed to get a few offcut round steel tubes to fit both turbo hoses and some hose clamps. Ideally I would carry spare hoses , however the cost of these over here is exorbitant . The exchange rate kills our import price and dealer mark ups are ridiculous. Last week I payed the equivelant to 250 US Dollar to replace my M.A.P. sensor , it sounds a lot to me ! They are asking about the same price for replacement hoses .

Pablo , I posted pic's of my rig on the forum ( post pic's of your rig ) back in Nov last year . I have the roof carrier that is made by a local company called Frontrunner and it clamps on to the grab rails . I find it useful for my family camping trips as well as when I do a 4x4 overland trip. I normally carry a twin jerry can holder on top with ammo boxes , tent , gas bottle etc. Otherwise it comes off and stores away in my garage .
