I used the search but could not find what I was looking for.
When I am in drive and have my foot on the brake while on a small incline, like a driveway or at a stop light, if I take my foot off the brake my Jeep sometimes rolls backwards. I have not noticed this in other rides that I have. Is it common with the Liberty? If I tap the gas pedal it will hold then.
Any help would be great.

That's seems to be pretty normal for the KJ's with the 42RLE tranny(like yours).

I noticed you are in the Springs, you should check out the Rockies section and join us on a trail sometime.

Oh and welcome to L.O.S.T.!!!!!!!!!!

these are not big inclines, and our Grand Cherokee does not do it. Maybe it is just the libby :?

I have been checking out the Rockies section. I met a few of you in the Springs about a month ago at the ihop. I could not go on the ride.
I have since been talking to Ted and Marty
I think the Liberty is going to get taller.

The libby has a different torque. None of our other Jeeps do it either. Its just depends on how the tranny is setup.

That, and difficulty coming out of some potholes in reverse :) Who would have thought(*) ... there have been speculation about the cause, and apparently there is a flash that will somewhat mask this problem.

(*) 4-Low + reverse will get you out. Don't know what you'd do if you had 4x2.

It will not roll back when the engine is cold, therefore idle rpm is high. It will hold steady.
Once you drive around for about 3-5 minutes, or if it is warm enough, it will roll back in a steep incline because idle rpm is lower now.

jeep has lower idle rpm, along with it's connections in tranny, etc.. to save gas.
why are you letting your foot off the brake anyway? It is not good even if it holds. If it is really steep and you got a car behind ya like in the parking lot incline, just use your other foot, you got another one, don't ya?

The pothole that did it for me was in a parking lot at a yummy Vietnamese restaurant (but that's subject for another time).

So there I was, thinking I had a Jeep, right? Pothole in the parking space? No problemo! I put the front half of the KJ in the hole and went to have dinner. When I came out and put the KJ in reverse I could NOT come back out of the hole. Rev'd up to 3000RPM and it still didn't budge. At this point I though OK, maybe more power is NOT a good idea since I did NOT want to ram the cars behind me should the KJ jerk out of the pothole all of a sudden.

Put her in 4-Low and she got out ...

Keep in mind the pothole is about the width of the Jeep so the entire front is pointing downward a bit, and it was about 2 - 3 inches deep. I suspect I did not have enough transmission fluid pressure when parked in that position for the time.

The Jeep TSB for this is worded something like "difficulty reversing up a hill" (ha!)

pothole? I drove through a uncovered man hole last week. It is a weird practice in NYC that they uncover manholes and "storm drains" so that the highways don't get flooded.. Luckily it was about 20" diameter or less.. (since I didn't get stuck in it) I saw a few sedans stuck down the road in a few different storm drains...

Well that is just the nature of manuals. When you have your foot on the clutch and release the break, you roll...oh, man, I see now, you have one of those newfangled automatics!!!yuk, yuk

Hahaha.. If he had manual and if he asked why the jeep rolls when I let my foot off the gas, that would be pretty funny.. :D
Put your foot on the brake.... No no, the one in the center.. :D I love driving manual.. sadly all manuals I drove were sedans, crappy old 80 hp junk!
